Anti-Jewish hate crimes climbed 8.5 percent in New York City between January and July 2026, reaching 205 confirmed incidents compared to 189 during the same period last year, according to the New York Police Department. Despite shootings and murders falling to historic lows across the city, bias-motivated crimes overall rose to a total of 360 incidents this year, with Jews targeted in 57 percent of all hate crimes while making up 10 percent of the city population.
NYPD Reports 205 Antisemitic Incidents and 360 Overall Hate Crimes in 2026
The latest figures from the NYPD show a continued escalation in bias-motivated offenses targeting Jewish New Yorkers. NYPD officials announced on Monday that confirmed hate crimes against Jews rose to 205 between January and July 2026. This increase mirrors the proportion seen in 2025, when Jews were similarly targeted in more than half of all reported hate crimes. Overall bias-motivated incidents across the city climbed to 360 this year. When asked by press time for a breakdown of these hate crimes into violent and non-violent categories, the NYPD did not respond.
High-Profile Attacks Leave Jewish Residents on Alert Amid Elevated Five-Year Trends
Antisemitic incidents reached a record high in 2024 following Hamas’s Oct. 7, 2023, attacks on Israel and Israel’s subsequent retaliation in Gaza. Although figures fell slightly in 2025, they have remained elevated over the past five years. While total confirmed hate crimes and those aimed at Jews dipped below 2026 monthly averages in July, a string of high-profile attacks last month has left Jewish residents on alert. Those incidents include the double stabbing of a Jewish man and an Asian man in Manhattan, the assault of a Jewish man in Brooklyn by an alleged assailant who shouted antisemitic slurs, and the vandalism of two Queens synagogues with motor oil and feces.
Political Rhetoric Draws Condemnation and Scrutiny Over Rising Incidents
Some Israeli officials and pro-Israel Jewish leaders have accused Mayor Zohran Mamdani of fueling antisemitic incidents through his staunch criticism of Israel. Last month, Mamdani called Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a “war criminal” and urged the United States government to arrest him for war crimes in Gaza. Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations Danny Danon publicly connected Mamdani’s statements to the Upper West Side stabbing of Moshe Grunhaus, which happened hours later.
“Since Zohran Mamdani took office as Mayor of New York City, there has been a troubling rise in hate crimes targeting Jews across the city,” Danon said on X/Twitter. “This is not just our opinion. The NYPD’s own statistics show a sharp increase in antisemitic hate crimes since January 2026.”
Mamdani’s office did not respond to requests for comment regarding allegations that his rhetoric contributed to antisemitism. However, Mamdani issued a statement on Monday calling it “unacceptable” that “while Jewish New Yorkers comprise a minority of our city’s population, they continue to comprise the majority of the victims of hate crimes.” Mamdani noted that his administration has boosted the budget for the Office of Hate Crime Prevention by more than 800 percent. “The work to uproot antisemitism out of this city is one that will continue until we see hate crimes come to an end in the city,” Mamdani said.
