Breaking News: Bulgarian Prosecutor-General Files Immunity Lift Requests Against Six MPs
Bulgaria’s chief prosecutor, Ivan Geshev, has submitted a request to the 51st National Assembly to lift the immunities of six members of parliament (MPs). The move comes on the advice of the Sofia City Prosecutor’s Office (SCPO) and Sofia District Prosecutor’s Office (SDPO), aiming to progress ongoing criminal proceedings against them.
The MPs in Question:
- Radostin Vassilev (MEP) – The request seeks to resume a criminal case against Vassilev before the Sofia City Court. The case, stalled due to his immunity, pertains to an alleged offense committed in 2023.
- Veselin Vevesov and Angel Georgiev (Revival) – Prosecutors want to revive a 2021 case against Vevesov and Georgiev for hooliganism and assaulting police officers. The Sofia District Court halted the proceedings due to their parliamentary immunity.
- Lena Borislavova (PP-DB) – Borislavova faces a request to lift her immunity after the SDPO’s examining magistrate found sufficient evidence for her involvement in a document forgery crime. The offense allegedly occurred in May 2021, involving false documents purporting to be signed by members of the “Preserve Coral” association.
- Güney Dalolu (DP-SN) – Dalolu’s immunity is targeted following sufficient evidence presented by the SCPO’s examining magistrate. The MP allegedly threatened to withhold campaign support in the 2021 parliamentary elections unless 20 preferential votes were secured for him in Veliko Tarnovo.
- Mario Rangelov (Democracy, Rights, and Freedoms) – The prosecutor’s office seeks to lift Rangelov’s immunity due to evidence indicating his involvement in crimes against political rights. The MP is accused of orchestrating a scheme to bribe voters in support of a specific coalition during the recent snap parliamentary elections.
Geshev’s requests aim to ensure fair and unimpeded justice, as these MPs currently enjoy parliamentary immunity from criminal prosecution. The National Assembly will now consider these requests, potentially paving the way for the resumption of the respective criminal cases.
