Bergen gridlocked as heavy snow shuts down Bybanen
In Bergen, both lines of the Bybanen are at a standstill due to heavy snowfall overnight on Friday, leading to significant travel disruptions. Several bus lines have also been affected, as reported by Bergens Tidende.
Air and helicopter traffic impacted
Snowfall has also caused widespread delays and cancellations in air travel. Both Bergen Airport Flesland and Stavanger Airport Sola reported numerous delays on Saturday morning. Helicopter services at both airports have been impacted as well.
39 cm of snow in Bergen; more expected
Meteorologists have confirmed that Bergen received 39 cm of snow on Saturday morning, 18 cm more than the previous day. Geir Ottar Fagerlid, a meteorologist at the Norwegian Meteorological Institute, told Bergenavisen that this amount is unusual for Bergen and that more snow is expected.
"Bergen isn’t used to this much snow," Fagerlid said, adding that the snow is expected to stay for at least a week. He noted that while Bergen did have a snow period last year, this year’s snowfall is unusual for its duration.
