Operating out of the former Quimby School on Main Street, the Somerset Connect Center opened its doors in 2024. The facility was established to help residents who have devices and internet connections but lack the confidence or training to use them safely, according to Elizabeth Caruso of the Somerset Economic Development Corporation. “In a rural area, and many times rural income area, our residents may have internet access, and they may have a device, but they don’t know how really how to safely and successfully use them,” Caruso stated. The center grew out of the Somerset Broadband Coalition, a network of over 40 organizations across the county working to expand internet access, distribute affordable devices, and provide free classes.

Hands-On Tech Support and Digital Literacy Classes
Visitors can access one-on-one technical support four days a week through walk-ins or scheduled appointments. Assistance covers everything from basic device troubleshooting and email setup to social media, Microsoft Office, and Google apps. Scarlett DeShong, the center’s digital educator, noted that apprehension remains a major barrier for many visitors. “A lot of people are afraid to use the internet or they’re afraid they are going to break something,” DeShong said. Questions vary widely by community; for instance, educators in Jackman frequently assist French-speaking residents with “cutting the cord” from traditional cable and finding alternative ways to download television stations.
Integrating Social Services and Telehealth Access
Beyond digital skills, the center addresses broader community challenges such as rural transportation limitations by hosting visiting social services. “So many people struggle with transportation, so we wanted to bring our social services here to meet with the people,” Caruso explained. The facility features conference rooms, classrooms, and private meeting spaces, including a dedicated telehealth room. Equipped with a desktop computer, camera, and audio capabilities, this private space allows residents to connect directly with medical providers.
