SpaceX to Build $100B Starbase Launch Facility in Louisiana

SpaceX announced plans on Tuesday to build Starbase, Louisiana, a $100 billion launch facility and its largest site yet, designed to support thousands of Starship flights annually. Construction begins in 2027, with the first Starship orbital launches targeted for 2029, alongside an accelerated timeline for Nvidia-powered orbital data centers.

Elon Musk’s aerospace company is expanding beyond its Texas headquarters and Florida locations with a massive economic and infrastructure footprint in the Southern U.S. SpaceX unveiled plans on Tuesday to construct the expansive launch and manufacturing site in Louisiana, committing significant capital to support heavy-lift operations for Earth orbit, the moon, and Mars.

Investment Scale and Infrastructure at Starbase, Louisiana

The project carries an estimated price tag of $100 billion (£73bn) and will sprawl across a 125,000-acre (50,585-hectare) site. Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry confirmed the massive capital investment, noting that construction on the facility is scheduled to kick off in 2027. The state’s economic development agency projects that the complex will add more than 3,000 jobs to the region.

According to the Louisiana Economic Development agency, workers at the base—the largest of its kind in the world—will earn an average wage that would be 192% more than the region’s current average salary. The agency also estimated that the massive aerospace hub will create more than 8,100 new jobs indirectly. The historic project will establish Louisiana as a global hub for next-generation aerospace, with the capacity and infrastructure needed to dramatically increase launch frequency and expand access to space, the agency added. The facility in Louisiana will share its name with another SpaceX site on the southern tip of Texas, where in 2025 residents in an area of Cameron County approved incorporating the patch of land as a city called Starbase.

Targeting Flight Cadence and Orbital Data Center Timelines

The new southern facility is engineered for high-frequency operations. SpaceX stated that the site will eventually be able to support “thousandsof Starship launches per year, targeting Earth's orbit, the moon, and Mars, with Musk adding that Starbase willultimately have over a dozen launch towers, enabling more than 30 Starship flights per day.” The company’s heavy-lift Starship rocket will haul up cargo like the company’s Starlink satellites and orbital data centers.

In tandem with the Louisiana spaceport unveiling, Musk took to X to update timelines for launching the rocket company’s first AI-powered satellites, which would eventually depart from Starbase, Louisiana. SpaceX, in partnership with Nvidia, has designed a space-optimized Vera Rubin NVL72 system for launch to orbit in Q4 next year, with significant scale in 2028, Musk said in a post on Monday afternoon. Musk’s post comes on the heels of the announcement that SpaceX and Nvidia would be deploying Nvidia Vera processors to accelerate the orchestration, code execution, and data processing that powers its next generation of agentic AI. The companies have worked together in the past and earlier this year announced that Nvidia chips would power SpaceX’s upcoming AI satellites, aka orbital data centers. SpaceX in the past had said it would target 2028 for the launch of these satellites, but Musk’s new timeline pulls that forward to Q4 2027, with volume launches in 2028.

Wall Street Projections and Technological Hurdles

Financial analysts are already factoring the long-term infrastructure buildup into valuations, and SpaceX stock gained on Tuesday, closing up at 137.95 +2.95 (+2.19%) at 4:00:00 PM EDT on August 25. Wall Street is positioned for SpaceX to hit these timelines much later and is quite bullish on the prospects. From 2029 on, we expect SpaceX to pursue orbital compute towards ~75GW by the end of 2031 at a significantly cheaper cost than could be done on Earth, JPMorgan analyst Doug Anmuth wrote in a note to clients on Tuesday. We believe significant upside potential remains as the company quite literally builds out the next frontier. Musk has been known to issue aggressive timelines that subsequently aren’t hit, as seen with past timelines for Tesla’s Cybertruck, the Tesla Semi, and the still unreleased next-gen Tesla Roadster.

Despite the bullish market posture, another key challenge for ramping up orbital data center deployment is how SpaceX will get the payload into space. Its powerful Starship rocket is slated to carry the satellites into space, but it’s still in testing. Though the rocket had a successful test launch and release of some Starlink satellites, it still hasn’t reached the high-altitude orbit necessary for some satellite launches, and only the booster portion of the rocket has landed safely at the launch pad thus far. Nevertheless, an updated timeline for orbital data centers is good news for SpaceX investors. Interestingly, the news about SpaceX and its Nvidia partnership comes a day before Nvidia will release its highly anticipated quarterly earnings after the bell on Wednesday, where any hiccups in Nvidia’s outlook or performance in its AI and data center business could put significant strain on the tech and AI trade, as well as the broader market, which is still trading near all-time highs. SpaceX shares also started trading in June on New York’s technology-focused Nasdaq in the world’s biggest ever stock market debut.
