A Russian Su-57 fighter flew to an international airshow in Egypt using internal weapon bay fuel tanks instead of external pylons, according to a report by The Defence Blog. The flight highlights how fifth-generation aircraft maintain stealth capabilities during long-distance redeployments by internalizing fuel storage.
Su-57E Flight to El Alamein Airshow and Combat Readiness
The export variant, designated as the Su-57E, completed the journey to the international airshow in El Alamein with a single intermediate stop, according to the United Aircraft Corporation (OAC). Rostec and OAC reported that enough fuel remained after landing to cover roughly another 1,000 kilometers.
That reserve fuel allowed the fighter to perform a full demonstration flight the following day. Rostec and OAC characterized that next-day aerial performance as comparable to a full-fledged combat flight.
Why Russia Swapped External Pylons for Internal Bays
Fighter jets typically rely on external fuel tanks to extend flight ranges for long-distance missions. However, external drop tanks increase aerodynamic drag and significantly expand a jet’s radar cross-section, which compromises its low-observable stealth profile.
According to Rostec, utilizing internal fuel tanks increases flight range without forcing that aerodynamic and radar trade-off. “The possibility of using built-in fuel tanks in the weapon bays, instead of external suspension points, fully corresponds to the concept of a fifth-generation aircraft,” the company stated. Rostec also noted that this internal configuration preserves the aircraft’s aerodynamic efficiency while securing a substantial operational radius.
Did you know? Fifth-generation fighters are engineered to keep all ordnance and fuel internally. External stores act like giant mirrors on radar screens, completely ruining a jet’s low-observable design.
Export Status and International Lineup at El Alamein
OAC describes the Su-57E as an aircraft featuring low observability, high maneuverability, and compatibility with a wide array of weaponry. Russian officials stated that deliveries of the Su-57E to foreign customers have already started, though they did not specify which countries received the aircraft or in what quantities.
The El Alamein airshow ran from September 8 to September 10. It marked the second appearance of the Su-57E in Egypt, following an earlier showing earlier in 2024. During the exhibition, the Russian aircraft shared the flightline alongside military aircraft from the United States Air Force, the Texas Air National Guard, and Chinese military aviation units.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Su-57E?
The Su-57E is the export variant of the Russian Su-57 fifth-generation fighter jet, featuring low-observable stealth characteristics and high maneuverability.
Why did the Su-57 use internal fuel tanks for the Egypt flight?
According to Rostec, using internal weapon bay tanks instead of external pylons prevents the increase of aerodynamic drag and radar visibility, preserving the aircraft’s stealth capabilities.
Who manufactures the Su-57?
The aircraft is produced by the United Aircraft Corporation (OAC) and backed by state conglomerate Rostec.
