In a significant update to the Tarwekamp explosion case, a Dutch court has decided to keep the four suspects in custody for a further 90 days. This extension, granted by the Rechtbank in Den Haag, indicates the severity of the charges and the ongoing investigation.

The explosion on December 7th claimed the lives of six individuals, including members of a family, a visitor, a resident whose family was abroad, and a man who resided in one of the affected apartments. Four people were also left injured. The court’s decision to maintain the suspects in custody, with restricted contact only to their legal representatives, underscores the gravity of the allegations against them.

Targeted Attack on Bridal Boutique?

The police investigation suggests that the bridal boutique on the Tarwekamp may have been the intended target. One of the suspects is reported to be the ex-partner of the boutique’s owner, identified as Moshtag B. (33). Police believe that B. could also have been the mastermind behind the attack. He was apprehended in Rotterdam, while the other suspects hail from Roosendaal and Oosterhout, aged 23, 29, and 33.

Previous Arrests and Concerns

Prior to the explosion, Moshtag B. and two other suspects were arrested in Oosterhout. They were found in possession of materials that could potentially be used for an attack, such as jerrycans filled with gasoline and heavy fireworks. The owner of the bridal boutique had expressed concern about why two of the suspects were released before the explosion.

Community Support and Fundraising

The impact of the explosion on the Tarwekamp community has been immense, with mental scars lingering two and a half weeks after the tragedy. Outpourings of support have come from across the Netherlands, with a national fundraising campaign raising €654,008 to help those affected. More than 20,000 people contributed to the initiative, with the funds designated to provide relief and support to the victims and their families.
