Ukraine Boosts Military Training: Basic Training Duration Extended Amid Intensified Battles

In a bid to enhance combat readiness, the Ukrainian military has extended the duration of basic training for new recruits. According to General Valery Zaluzhny, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU), the basic overall military preparation (BOMT) period has been increased from the previous 30 days to 1.5 months.

During a year-end meeting, Zaluzhny underscored the importance of ensuring a full 14-day adaptation period for new conscripts in their respective brigades. This comes amidst the current intense combat situation, where maintaining the original 5-14 day post-BOMT training period has proven challenging.

"Notwithstanding the current circumstances, commanders must strive to maximize their soldiers’ preparedness for the modern battlefield, thus maximizing their survival chances," Zaluzhny emphasized.

On the agenda at the gathering was the need to improve and intensify training quality. All mobilized Ukrainians are required to undergo BOMT before being dispatched to their units. This foundational course equips recruits with essential skills and knowledge to effectively perform military tasks and excel on the battlefield.

The revamped BOMT program, launched on November 1 in Ukrainian training centers, now spans 1.5 months—nearly a five-week extension compared to its earlier 30-day duration. This extended period aims to better prepare new soldiers for the complex realities of modern warfare. By investing more time in training, Ukraine seeks to bolster its military capabilities and fortify its defenses against ongoing and future threats.
