Fireworks and Pirate Festivals Claim Near 600 Bird Lives in Koprivshtitsa Region

by Chief Editor January 2, 2025
written by Chief Editor

Title: New Year’s Fireworks and Foyers Leave 591 Dead Mountain Chinkos and 15 Injured in Kopyricas

In a grim start to the New Year, the Green Balkans Rescue Center team attended to 591 mountain chinko casualties and a further 15 critically injured birds, following the festive celebrations in Kopyricas. According to a local NGO, the birds fell victim to fireworks and pyrotechnics, suffering fatal stress-induced injuries.

A post-mortem examination conducted at the Rescue Center’s clinic revealed that the chinkos had succumbed to severe stress, causing massive internal hemorrhaging and brain bleeds. The incident has sparked outrage among environmentalists, who question the necessity of fireworks displays, given the clear impact on vulnerable wildlife.

"These holidays, this so-called ‘joy’, is costing the lives of innocent creatures," lamented the Green Balkans team. "We’re seeing this carnage in Kopyricas, but who knows where else this disturbing scenario might be playing out across the country?"

The mountain chinko (Fringilla montifringilla), protected under Bulgaria’s Biodiversity Act, is listed as a species of ‘Least Concern’ on the IUCN Red List, although its population is reported to be declining.

Hundreds Die of Stress during New Year’s Eve Firework Display in Koprivshtitsa

591 Birds Die in Bulgaria Due to New Year Fireworks

In a grim start to 2025, 591 protected mountain finches have lost their lives in Kоприvщица, Bulgaria, due to stress induced by New Year fireworks, according to the environmental organization "Zeleni Balkani". The casualties were part of a total of 606 mountain finches brought to the organization’s wildlife rescue center, with the majority, 591, found dead.

Post-mortem examinations revealed that the birds died of stress, with extensive internal bleeding and hemorrhages in the skull being key indicators. The incident came to light on New Year’s Day when locals reported seeing numerous dead birds near Kоприvщиca. Upon investigation, "Zeleni Balkani" estimated that the actual death toll could be higher, as they could only retrieve and count 606 finches before sunset.

"All these birds are victims of the New Year’s ‘war in the streets’, this time in Kоприvщиca… but who knows where thepicture is the same," the organization stated.

The use of fireworks during New Year celebrations has been a contentious issue among environmentalists and animal welfare advocates worldwide. The loud noises and bright lights can cause immense stress and disorientation in wildlife, often leading to fatal consequences.

As public awareness about the impact of fireworks on wildlife grows, many countries and cities are considering or implementing restrictions on their use. Bulgaria, however, continues to grapple with this issue, with the Kоприvщиca incident serving as a stark reminder of the potential hazards.

"Zeleni Balkani" urges the public to consider the wellbeing of wildlife when celebrating, and to advocate for responsible and humane New Year traditions. Meanwhile, the organization is providing ongoing care to the surviving mountain finches, hoping for a better year ahead for these vulnerable creatures.

At Home on the Rails: A Mother and Her 9-Year-Old Son Ring in the New Year on a Train to Varna (GALLERY)

written by Chief Editor

Title: Unconventional New Year’s Eve: Mother and 9-Year-Old Son Start 2025 aboard Train to Bulgaria‘s Black Sea Coast

In a unique twist on typical New Year’s Eve celebrations, Bulgarian mother Gabrielle Iliева and her 9-year-old son chose to embark on a train journey from Sofia to Varna as the clock struck midnight, ushering in 2025. While others lit fires on city squares or converged in restaurants, this duo found their celebration in the rhythmic clack of railway tracks.

"Living alone with my son makes it challenging to organize big gatherings during holidays. A night in front of the TV also lacks appeal. Experiences, however, are what truly matter," Ilieva shared with bTV News. To make their train trip extra special, they packed food, drinks, and festive decorations.

At the last moment, Ilieva had a revelation: "It struck me that little details like decorative lights could create a magical atmosphere." She prepared a traditional New Year’s Eve banitsa with coins inside for good luck. The train’s warmth was such that they had to open the windows for ventilation.

They were not alone in their adventure; other families with children joined them on the platform. This was not their first time greeting the new year on a train. Four years ago, when her son was just 5, they traveled from Varna to Sofia on New Year’s Eve.

This year, Ilieva decided it was more important to start the year with a journey rather than ending it that way. Upon arrival, they enjoyed the first day of 2025 on Varna’s sun-kissed beach.

"Radev: Time to Seek a Path Beyond Political Impotence and Corruption"

by Chief Editor January 1, 2025
written by Chief Editor

Bulgaria‘s President Warns of Global Risks, Calls for Unity in 2025

In his New Year’s address, Bulgarian President Rumen Radev painted a grim picture of the world facing an array of challenges, with wars intensifying, democracy under strain, and new trials looming on the horizon. The stability, peace, and freedom that once seemed assured in Europe are now in jeopardy, he said.

"Crises teach us that our future lies in collective efforts and in each of us actively participating in every life and political choice," Radev stated. "Without citizen involvement and control, the state weakens and cannot guarantee basic needs. Social and even personal relations become strained, our vast national potential remains untapped, and our future becomes hostage to oligarchic and clannish interests."

Radev called on Bulgarians to unite and overcome political impotence, corruption, and insecurity. He praised the country’s talented citizens—from academics and engineers to artists and athletes—for writing new chapters in Bulgaria’s history and inspiring confidence in the nation’s potential.

"Let us not forget those working on Christmas night to ensure our lives, health, and safety—medics, police, soldiers, and on-duty teams," he added.

Looking ahead to 2025, Radev expressed confidence that Bulgarians would rise to the challenges they face. "In an era of global upheaval, unity is the path to preserving our homeland," he said. "I believe we have the talent and will to establish Bulgaria as a strong, sovereign, and prosperous nation on the European map."

Radev wished Bulgarians peace, health, and faith in the future, and hoped that the New Year would bring joy and light to all. He concluded by wishing everyone a happy New Year 2025.

Professor Rachev’s Shocking January Forecast: What Lies Ahead…

by Chief Editor December 29, 2024
written by Chief Editor

Enjoy a Mild Holiday: Expect a Warm December and Winter's Worst Snow, Cold Peaks … – Weather Underground”>January

Brace yourselves for a toasty December and January, as winter seems to have lost its bite. According to Professor Georgi Rachev, a renowned climatologist, we’re in for a treat: "The weather is favorable. While Friday might bring some snow, wind will soon subside. On New Year’s Eve, expect December-like warmth."

Temperature fluctuations are expected, beginning with chilly mornings and gradually warming up in the afternoons. Professor Rachev assures us that New Year’s Eve will be perfect for outdoor celebrations, with temperatures ranging between 8-12°C. Warm weather is set to continue through the following week, ideal for travel plans, with calmer winds and more sunshine.

Rachev predicts a warmer-than-usual December, stating, "We’re sending December out warmer than usual. In fact, January too looks milder. Winter isn’t as harsh as it seems."

For skiers and snowboarding enthusiasts, the news is just as delightful. Banks and Borovets are expected to enjoy splendid weather, despite Friday’s chilly and windy start in North Bulgaria, with reduced visibility at certain areas.

However, the weekend brings more snowfall, especially in the mountains, with heavy snow predicted in parts of Northern Bulgaria and the Northeast. Higher altitudes might see snowstorms and slips, so be cautious on the passes.

Despite the varied weather, temperatures won’t stray far from the current range of 0°C to 5°C. Only the capital, Sofia, experienced sub-zero temperatures this morning. So, pack your sunscreen, enjoy the mild winter, and let’s bid 2022 a warm farewell!
