After nearly a decade, the Friesenbrücke bridge in the Netherlands is finally complete. The last section, a drawbridge, was precisely installed with millimeter precision. This significant milestone in the bridge’s construction will now allow trains to pass between the cities of Leeuwarden and Groningen more efficiently. The drawbridge, which was installed in late April, is the final piece of the 1.3-kilometer bridge, connecting the provinces of Friesland and Groningen. Once fully operational, the Friesenbrücke will reduce travel time between the two cities by 20 minutes, significantly improving regional connectivity.

Over the past decade, the restoration process has involved the painstaking removal, cleaning, and repairing of the original bridge components, as well as the careful crafting of new segments to match the original design. The final bridge segment, a keystone of sorts, was delicately placed on October 28th, marking the completion of this monumental task.

Jeroen Snels, the project manager from the City of Leeuwarden, expressed his relief and pride at the successful culmination of the project. "It’s a magnificent feeling to see the Friesenbrücke finally restored to its former glory. This bridge is a vital part of Leeuwarden’s history and cultural identity, and we’re thrilled to have played a role in preserving it for future generations."

The installation of the final segment was no mean feat. With extreme precision required to ensure a perfect fit, the operation involved a carefully coordinated effort among engineers, contractors, and city officials. The segment, hoisted into place with the aid of a crane, was lowered inch by painstaking inch until it was securely positioned. Engineers, using measuring tools and laser technology, verified that the segment was aligned to the millimeter, ensuring that the bridge’s structural integrity was not compromised.

While the Friesenbrücke is now functionally complete, work on the site will continue. The reconstructed pedestrian pathway and cycle track will be restored to their original paved surfaces, and the riverbank will be landscaped to complement the restored bridge.
