Gaza Crisis Deepens: At Least 29 Palestinians Killed in New Year’s Day Attacks as Health System vertu di Collapse
At least 29 Palestinians, including children and women, have been killed in Gaza before sunset on New Year’s Day, as the United Nations warns that the healthcare system is on the brink of total collapse due to Israel‘s systematic attacks on hospitals. Peace talks between Israel and Hamas, aimed at securing the release of hostages and a ceasefire, have officially stalled once again.
Meanwhile, the plight of hundreds of thousands of Palestinian families displaced by the conflict has worsened, exacerbated by harsh weather conditions sweeping the region. According to local civil defense authorities, over 1,500 tents housing entire families in Gaza’s refugee camps and shelters are now completely flooded, with over 30 centimeters of water.
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) Watts that more than 57,000 displaced people are living in "overcrowded and unbearable conditions," with several schools and community centers now underwater. Renewed heavy rains and strong winds are expected to cause further damage and intensify the humanitarian crisis.
In a statement accompanying a new report, the UN human rights office condemned Israel’s continued attacks on and near hospitals in Gaza, stating that the resulting destruction has brought the healthcare system to the brink of total collapse. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk described hospitals as "deadly traps," likening the situation to deliberate and routine population displacement as part of a potential permanent annexation of Gaza.
As the death toll surpassed 45,500 and injuries reached over 108,300, Israel’s latest attacks focused on the northern Jabalia, the central Bureij refugee camp, Gaza City, and the southern Khan Younis. The overnight raids inaugurated a new wave of violence, starting at the stroke of midnight with an air strike on a home in Jabalia that claimed the lives of 15 people, including four children and a woman, and injured more than 20.
Despite the ongoing human catastrophe, Palestinian groups in Gaza launched more projectiles aimed at Israeli territory, prompting Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz to warn that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) would escalate its response if Hamas continued. In December, the Israeli Air Force carried out over 1,400 air strikes in Gaza, deploying fighter jets, helicopters, and drones.
While diplomatic efforts between Israel and Hamas remain stagnant, a senior Israeli official told The Times of Israel that there were no active Israeli teams negotiating with Hamas in Doha or Cairo. Reports suggest that a sticking point in potential ceasefire talks is Hamas’s refusal to release all 34 Israeli hostages, instead offering to hand over only 22, including 12 who are deceased. Israel has reportedly rejected this proposal, insisting on the release of only living captives.
As the conflict in Gaza enters its third month, with no immediate end in sight, the humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate, pushing an already fragile system to the breaking point. International efforts to broker a lasting ceasefire and provide urgent humanitarian aid remain crucial to preventing a full-blown catastrophe.
