Indonesia Embracing BRICS: A Boost to Market and U.S.-RI Relations, Says LUHUT

Indonesia Joins BRICS: Market Expansion and Independence on the Agenda

In a significant move, Indonesia has officially become a full member of the BRICS group, formerly comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. This strategic shift, driven by President Prabowo Subianto‘s leadership, promises to expand Indonesia’s market reach and bolster its economic independence.

Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, the Chairman of Indonesia’s Economic Policy Agency (DEN), welcoming the news, emphasized the potential market expansion: "Our market will be bigger," he said in a press conference at his Jakarta office. "That’s the main benefit we get from BRICS."

Luhut underscored Indonesia’s sovereignty, stating that it would not align with any single nation. He expressed confidence in Prabowo’s leadership, dismissing fears of retaliatory measures from the West or the U.S.: "Indonesia is too big to take sides. We need to be independent and somewhat, dare I say, mischievous."

With a larger market, Indonesia can mitigate challenges faced by other nations, such as energy crises in Europe and economic struggles in China and the U.S., Luhut explained. The DEN will advise Prabowo and help implement priority economic policies.

Indonesia’s BRICS membership was formally announced by Brazil’s foreign ministry on January 6, 2025. The ministry noted Indonesia’s eagerness to reform global institutions and contribute positively to South-South cooperation. Brazil, currently holding the BRICS presidency, approved Indonesia’s application in Johannesburg in 2023.

Founded in 2009, BRICS has welcomed several new members alongside Indonesia, including Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

With this development, Indonesia positions itself as a key player on the global economic stage, asserting its independence while forging stronger ties with influential nations.

Indonesia‘s Transigration Ministry Praises Free Nutritious Meal Program

The Spokesperson of the Ministry of Transmigration, Irwan Fecho, has expressed appreciation for the launch of the Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) program, which began on Monday, January 6, 2025. He deemed the program a testament to President Prabowo Subianto’s commitment to humanitarian efforts, aiming to ensure the growth of Indonesia’s future generations into intelligent, healthy, and competitive citizens.

In this program, President Prabowo emphasized a target distribution of 3 million people within the January-March 2025 period. The Ministry of Transmigration, with its extensive experience in managing transmigration areas, has expressed strong commitment in supporting the program.

The Ministry of Transmigration plays a strategic role, particularly due to the transmigration areas’ potential rich natural resources that support food security, including fertile agricultural land. Irwan further mentioned that the Minister of Transmigration, Iftitah Sulaiman, had conducted roadshows with various ministries and planned further collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture (Kementan), the Food Agency, and the National Nutrition Agency to ensure the sustainability and quality of food ingredients in the MBG program.

He added, "In transmigration areas, there are many potential commodities, such as paddy, other food crops, and livestock and fisheries that can contribute to national food self-sufficiency." Irwan took the example of Merauke, where the Ministry of Agriculture had planned to optimize land up to 45,000 hectares, with 30,000 hectares located within the Salor transmigration area.

With the available land and experienced human resources, Irwan hoped that the MBG program could run smoothly and provide maximum benefits for Indonesian communities. Looking ahead, the Ministry of Transmigration hopes to continue to boost productivity in transmigration areas to support local, regional, and even national food self-sufficiency.

"We want transmigration areas not only to meet their own food needs but also to have surplus production that can support food self-sufficiency outside the transmigration areas," Irwan said, "By achieving this, we aim to create a healthy, intelligent, and forward-looking young generation."

Kudus Regency Allocates IDR 17.3 Million for Free Nutritious Meal Program, But It’s Only Enough for 5 Days

Kudus Braces for Free Nutritious Meals Program Trial Run; TNI Helps Ensure Readiness

The local government of Kudus is not the only entity working tirelessly to support the upcoming Free Nutritious Meals program. The Kodim 0722/Kudus military command is also under pressure to intensify monitoring of the program’s readiness.

Major Infantry Muklisin, the commander of Kodim 0722/Kudus, explained that the military’s role in Kudus is primarily to aid in accelerating the Free Nutritious Meals program. Towards this, they are actively monitoring the preparations for the program’s trial run, scheduled for January 13, 2024.

A total of 3,729 beneficiaries are set to participate in the trial run, consisting of 3,496 students across 10 schools and 233 pregnant and lactating women. The program, to be conducted over seven days, has an estimated daily menu cost of IDR 15,000 per person. The total budget allocated for the trial run amounts to IDR 296,925,000, as per Major Muklisin.

The Free Nutritious Meals program in Kudus has faced a delay in its implementation. Originally planned for simultaneous rollout on January 6, 2025, it will now only commence on January 13, 2024. The Kudus Education, Youth, and Sports Department (Disdikpora) acknowledges this delay, with a lack of prepared supporting infrastructure being a key contributing factor.

Currently, Kudus has only one unit of the Satuan Pelayanan Pemenuhan Gizi (SPPG) or healthy kitchen, located at Ponpes Nashrul Ummah Mejobo. This facility is expected to cater to around 3,400 beneficiaries in several nearby schools.

Despite the delay, preparations and fine-tuning of the program are ongoing. This includes inspecting several re-purposed elementary school buildings to serve as potential Free Nutritious Meals kitchens. Anggun Nugroho, the Head of the Basic Education Division of Disdikpora Kudus, confirmed that they are assessing five potential locations. The final decision, however, rests with the National Nutrition Board (Badan Gizi Nasional).

The Kudus Disdikpora is committed to continuing this search until they have identified locations suitable for all 88 planned SPPG units in the Kudus Regency.

Prabowo Proposes Debt Waiver for 1 Million Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises, Totaling Rp 14 Trillion.

written by Chief Editor

Headline: Indonesia to Wipe Out Debts of 1 Million UMKM Businesses: Minister

Bogor, Indonesia – The Indonesian government has big plans to erase the debts of roughly 1 million micro, small, and medium enterprises (UMKM). This bold move aims to tackle a staggering amount of Rp 14 trillion in outstanding UMKM debt.

In a testament to the gravity of the issue, around 67,000 UMKM businesses are already in line for debt forgiveness under the government’s program. The beneficiaries are scattered across Indonesia, with the total amount slated for cancellation reaching Rp 2.5 trillion thus far.

Maman, the official spokesperson for the government, shared insights into the progress and scope of the debt forgiveness program during an interview at the Istana Bogor in West Java last Friday. He expressed enthusiasm about the possibility of clearing all 1 million UMKM debts, stating, "We aim to erase all 1 million UMKM debts so they can start anew and access financing facilities once more."

While the government is working diligently to expedite the process, Maman did not provide a specific timeline for the remaining 933,000 UMKM debts. However, he confirmed that President Prabowo Subianto will officially launch the program during the second week of January, with an inaugural event inviting 3,000 UMKM business owners whose debts have been forgiven.

"Next week, we’ll officially launch the program with an event inviting around 3,000 UMKM business owners. We’re waiting for President Prabowo’s schedule to finalize the details," Maman revealed. The government is committed to providing a fresh start for these UMKM businesses, with the ultimate goal of fostering economic growth and resilience.

Tax Chief’s Resistance to Prabowo’s Audit: Should He Resign?

by Chief Editor January 3, 2025

Headline: Clarity on Indonesia‘s PPN 12%: Lawmaker Challenges Director General of Taxation‘s Interpretation

In a surprising turn of events, the planned implementation of Indonesia’s 12% Value Added Tax (PPN) by the end of 2024 has sparked confusion and concern, with a top lawmaker accusing the Director General of Taxation of misinterpreting presidential directives.

President Prabowo Subianto had clearly stated that the PPN increase from 11% to 12% would only apply to luxury goods and services. However, Mukhamad Misbakhun, the chairman of the House of Representatives’ Committee XI, has found that the implementation by the Director General of Taxation is ambiguous and chaotic, with the ministerial regulation (PMK) No. 131/2024 causing confusion among businesses.

Misbakhun criticized the PMK for using a different basis for calculation, stating, "It’s as if the UU HPP cannot apply the PPN with multiple tariffs." He argued that the law does not prohibit a multitariff system, allowing for both 11% and 12% rates to coexist, with the latter only applied to luxury goods and services.

The Director General of Taxation, however, maintains that the PMK correctly implements the presidential instruction. In a separate statement, the Ministry of Finance declared that standard-rated items will be taxed at 12%, calculated with a factor of 11/12 of the selling price, replacement cost, or import value.

Misbakhun expressed bewilderment at this approach, stating, "Does this mean the Director General of Taxation has lost its loyalty in interpreting the president’s clear instructions?"

The lawmaker also slammed the rushed decision-making process, stating that the short lead time before implementation left businesses struggling to adapt their systems. He added that many retail companies have already charged PPN at 12%, confusing customers who ended up paying more than they should have.

Misbakhun lamented the complexity of the regulation, urging the Directorate General of Taxation to issue simpler, clearer rules to prevent misinterpretations and erode public trust in the presidency.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.

Prabowo’s Call for 50-Year Sentence for Corruptors: Not an Intervention, Says MA

by Chief Editor January 2, 2025
written by Chief Editor

Headline: Indonesia‘s High Court Clarifies President Prabowo‘s Stance on Corruption Punishments

Article:

The Supreme Court (MA) of Indonesia has weighed in on President Prabowo Subianto’s recent remarks regarding the punishment of corrupt officials, asserting that his statement was not an intervention from the executive into the judiciary. The clarification came during a press conference at the MA, attended by Yanto, the MA spokesperson, along with other top court officials.

Addressing a question about President Prabowo’s statement that corruptors with clear-cut cases should face harsher penalties, Yanto assured that the President’s words did not constitute an intervention into the judicial process. "President Prabowo was not interfering, he was merely expressing his stance," Yanto clarified.

President Prabowo’s statement, made during a planning meeting at Bappenas on December 30, 2024, had sparked conversations about the separation of powers. He had suggested that corrupt officials with clear cases and significant malfeasance should face harsher penalties, seemingly going as far as suggesting a 50-year prison sentence.

However, Yanto explained that the Indonesian legal system outlines the maximum punishment for corruption as the death penalty, as per the Law No. 31/1999 on Eradication of Criminal Acts of Corruption, as amended by Law No. 20/2001. Nevertheless, no corruptor in Indonesia has ever been sentenced to death.

Yanto further elucidated that the death penalty can only be applied under specific circumstances, such as corruption during a natural disaster, financial crisis, or wartime. The MA representative emphasized that the President’s statement did not interfere with the judiciary’s independent role in meting out punishment.

Prabowo’s initial statement came shortly after the Jakarta Corruption Court sentenced Harvey Moeis to 6.5 years in prison for corruption in the PT Timah mining case.

"Brawijaya Alleges Prabowo’s 50-Year Sentence Call Not an Intervention"

Indonesian President‘s Remarks on Corruption Penalties Draw Attention of Supreme Court

The Supreme Court (MA) has weighed in on recent statements made by President Prabowo Subianto regarding the punishment of corrupt officials. The MA has affirmed that the President’s remarks did not constitute interference from the executive branch into the judiciary.

At a press conference hosted by the MA, Chief Spokesperson Yanto was joined by MA’s Chief of Legal Services Sobandi and MA’s Head of Inter-Institutional Relations Rudi Sudianto to discuss various topics. During the conference, a journalist inquired about President Prabowo’s statement, in which he called for severe penalties for convicted corrupters.

"Unlike his predecessor, President Joko Widodo, who consistently deferred to the judgments of the courts, President Prabowo has publicly requested a 50-year prison sentence for corrupt officials. Does the MA feel that this is an instance of intervention, or rather, a mere expression of opinion?" the journalist asked.

Yanto, the Chief Spokesperson, responded by acknowledging that he had watched President Prabowo’s remarks during a Musrenbang event at Bappenas on Monday, December 30, 2024. He clarified that the President’s statement was not an intervention.

"That was not an intervention," Yanto explained. "His statement was simply a reiteration of his position. The President did not instruct or pressure the judiciary in any way."

The Supreme Court spokesperson went on to discuss the legal framework regarding penalties for corruption in Indonesia. While the country’s laws provide for the death penalty in severe cases, no corrupt official has ever been given such a sentence. The MA spokesperson highlighted that the death penalty would only be applicable in extraordinary circumstances, such as corruption during times of natural disasters, economic crises, or war.

President Prabowo’s call for severe penalties came days after the Jakarta Corruption Court (Tipikor) sentenced Harvey Moeis to 6.5 years in prison for his role in a corruption case involving the state-owned mining company, PT Timah. During his remarks, President Prabowo did not specify which corrupt official he was referring to but emphasized that "if the evidence is clear and the damage is significant, the penalty should not be too light." He urged relevant ministry officials to review the case and consider appealing the sentence.

The Supreme Court’s statement serves as a reminder of the separation of powers between the executive and judicial branches of government. While President Prabowo is entitled to express his views on matters of public interest, the judiciary maintains its independence in adjudicating cases and handing down verdicts.

First President to Witness the Closing of the APBN

written by Chief Editor

Historic First: President Prabowo Subianto Visits Finance Ministry to Witness 2024 APBN Budget Closure

In a unprecedented move, President Prabowo Subianto made history by visiting the Ministry of Finance on December 31, 2024, to personally witness the closure of the 2024 State Budget. This is the first time a president has attended this event, marking a significant milestone in the country’s fiscal history.

Minister of Finance Sri Mulyani Indrawati disclosed the president’s visit during the Opening Ceremony of the Indonesia Stock Exchange (BEI) for the Year 2025 on Thursday, January 2, 2025. She noted, "For the first time, a president is coming to the Ministry of Finance to witness the closure of the APBN [State Budget]."

The minister humorously added that the president’s visit was not just ceremonial, but also to personally interact and give instructions. "He might also want to see how much money is finally there," she said, laughing.

President Prabowo’s visit occurred from around 4 pm until Maghrib, during which the ministry briefed him on the implementation of the 2024 APBN. Sri Mulyani praised the APBN 2024 closure as a significant success, with a fiscal deficit notably lower than initially projected — below 2.7% of GDP.

"The APBN 2024 was closed with a deficit nearing the initial APBN Law (2.29%). This is an outstanding result, much lower than the initially projected 2.7%," she said. Although she refused to reveal the exact deficit figure, she assured that the ministry’s performance report for APBN 2024 would be released soon.

Sri Mulyani optimistically concluded, "The APBN 2024 was closed in a relatively healthy and secure manner, providing a strong foundation for the year 2025."
