Agents Under Heavy Fire: ‘We’re Being Pelted Here’

by Chief Editor January 4, 2025
written by Chief Editor

In the early hours of New Year’s Day, Dutch police found themselves under an unexpected barrage in The Hague. Not gunfire, but a hail of fireworks was the weapon of choice for revelers who chose to celebrate the new year in a manner that left law enforcement feeling under siege.

“We’re getting bombarded here,” a police spokesperson declared, as fireworks were thrown towards officers stationed in the heart of the city. The incident, which occurred around midnight, was not an isolated one. Reports streamed in from other officers stationed across the city, each detailing similar experiences.

One particularly brazen individual, an entrepreneur, was caught on camera hurling what appeared to be small ‘bombs’ towards the police. The footage, taken during the NieuwjaarsFixture – a tradition where people gather to set off fireworks, went viral. The man, seen wearing a distinctive yellow training vest, was later arrested and is currently facing charges.

The munificence of the Dutch in their New Year’s celebrations is well-known, but this year’s festivities have taken a more dangerous turn. The vicious volley of fireworks caused several officers to sustain minor injuries, and left others shaken. Today, the police have vowed to take stricter measures to ensure the safety of both officers and the public.

“This is unacceptable,” a police spokesperson stated. “We’re here to protect and serve the community, not to be targeted by fireworks. We urge everyone to celebrate responsibly and to respect the law.”

The Dutch court has wasted no time in meting out justice. A Hagenaar, a resident of The Hague, was sentenced to six months in prison for his role in the incident. His verdict comes hot on the heels of another local being handed a six-month sentence for a similar offense.

“We will not tolerate this kind of behavior,” a spokesperson from the Openbaar Ministerie (Public Prosecution Service) affirmed. “Those who endanger the lives of others, especially our law enforcement officers, will face the full force of the law.”

As the Netherlands enters the new year, it appears that stricter enforcement of firework regulations may be necessary to ensure that celebrations remain joyous and safe for all.

Agent Attack: Jugend Set Fire to Agents During New Year’s Eve Patrol in The Hague

In an unsettling turn of events, three on-duty police agents found themselves targeted by a group of juveniles while cycling along the bustling Marktweg in The Hague, just last year’s New Year’s Eve. The agents, who had been cruising ahead, encountered an unexpected threat that left them shaken but unharmed.

One of the youths, identified as Bourak M., ignited an illicit firework known as ‘nitraat’ and pursued the officers with the explosive device in hand. An eyewitness to the frenzied scene, an agent recounted, "I saw him hurl the lit firework in an arc, heading straight for the heads of my colleagues. The firework detonated just two meters above their heads, creating an ear-piercing blast."

Fortunately, the rapid response of the agents and their immediate evasive actions prevented any injuries. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers law enforcement personnel face daily, even during celebratory gatherings.

Following the incident, local authorities have emphasized the importance of responsible behavior during public events and have urged the public to respect law enforcement officers. Ongoing investigations aim to bring those responsible to justice.

As The Hague continues to grapple with the aftermath of this violent incident, citizens express hope for a safer and more peaceful city. The city’s police force remains steadfast in their commitment to maintain order and ensure the safety of all its residents.

Title: Tragic Vuurwerk Incident Claims Life of 14-year-old Jack

In the chilling aftermath of a reckless New Year’s Eve celebration, grief-stricken relatives are mourning the loss of a 14-year-old boy, Jack, who tragically lost his life while playing with a powerful ‘shell’ firework. The harrowing incident occurred in Rotterdam, where the teenager’s life was claimed in a matter of seconds when a malfunctioning firework detonated prematurely.

SEO Keywords: vuurwerk incident, Jack, Rotterdam, tragic death, firework malfunction, New Year’s Eve, grieving family

Meta Description:ROSSENDAAL – Een oudersdiploma, een canthus spear en vuurwerk waren de voorwerpen waarmee Jack (14) afstaken inueuse van zijn volwassenheid. The scene is a grim one, with a makeshift memorial of flowers and candles adorning the tram tracks where the young boy was struck by debris. His mother, Renate Degryse, stands solemnly with his two brothers, their eyes welling with tears. The brothers watched in horror as their sibling was launched through the air by the force of the explosion, his body ultimately landing on the tram rails.

Jack’s older brother, who witnessed the fatal incident, shares his recollection of the terrifying moment. "Zo’n shell doe je in een speciale buis. Dat deden we hier in het gras. Normaal heb je twee explosies. Eentje waardoor de shell omhoogschiet en de tweede is dan een grote knal. Maar toen Jack hem aanstak, ontplofte die meteen. De grote knal zeg maar."

Renate Degryse, Jack’s heartbroken mother, describes her son as a passionate firework enthusiast. "Jack wás vuurwerk", she says. "Hij was daar het hele jaar mee bezig. Alles netjes gesorteerd, soort bij soort." She fondly recalls how Jack would meticulously prepare for his explosive displays, always donning safety glasses and ensuring he had extra fuses and specialized lighters. "Hij deed dat met zoveel plezier altijd."

Though Renate is consumed by grief, she is also driven by anger – anger directed at the callous social media comments she has encountered, blaming her son’s tragic death on reckless behavior or stating that it was his own fault. "Sommige mensen moeten echt een stuk tape op hun mond doen en nooit meer in het openbaar praten. Gewoon ongegeneerd", she asserts. "En ja, wij hebben er altijd voor gekozen… om dan toch Jackie zijn passie uit te laten voeren… maar wel gewoon gecontroleerd."

As a mark of respect, the Rotterdam tram service, RET, has announced that it will reroute its trams if the makeshift memorial grows larger, ensuring that they do not disturb the somber atmosphere that has taken hold of the tracks where young Jack’s life was cruelly cut short.

Rest in peace, Jack, and condolences to your grieving family and loved ones.

Firework Tragedy: 11 Injured, including 13-Year-Old with Permanent Eye Damage – RTV Noord

by Chief Editor January 1, 2025
written by Chief Editor

New Year’s Day Brings Record Hospitalizations Due to Alcohol Consumption and Fireworks Injuries

The start of the new year brought an alarming surge in hospitalizations across the country, with young drinkers and fireworks-related injuries leading the charge. As the clock struck midnight, ambulances were overwhelmed by a deluge of calls, a trend observed by healthcare providers nationwide.

The Brandwondencentrum, a fireworks injury center, reported a staggering 11 casualties from fireworks accidents, including a 13-year-old child who suffered permanent eye damage. This comes despite the cancellation of public fireworks displays in some regions. Healthcare professionals warn that DIY fireworks can be as dangerous as professional ones and urge extreme caution when handling them.

Meanwhile, emergency departments grappled with a barrage of alcohol-related cases, particularly among young adults. According to De Gelderlander, drunken and disorderly partygoers contributed significantly to the heavy workload faced by ambulance services during the night. This trend was echoed across the nation, with numerous reports of young drinkers flooding hospitals on New Year’s Day.

One hospital reported treating a child for burns caused by fireworks, highlighting the risk these devices pose even to children. Despite canceled organized events, people still found ways to gather and celebrate, leading to unintended consequences.

Healthcare providers, however, were reassuring about their ability to manage the influx. Omroep West reported a busy but controlled situation in regional hospitals, demonstrating the institutions’ preparedness for such an occasion.

New Year’s Night in the Netherlands: Police Arrests, Car Fires, and Vuurwerk Chaos

The first hours of the 2025 New Year passed with some incident but otherwise peacefully in the Netherlands, with police making arrests and several dozen cars being torched across the country.

Arrests and Incidents

NOS news reports that the police arrested multiple people for acts of violence, hindering emergency services, and other criminal offenses. The exact number of arrests is not yet known, as the police, the Ministry of Justice and Security, and other organizations will release official figures and statements later.

One notable incident occurred in Utrecht, where over twenty burned-out car wrecks were towed to a special collection point before midnight, according to a towing company employee speaking to RTV Utrecht.

Vuurwerk Injuries and Damage

The number of eye injuries caused by fireworks is still unclear, but it has been announced that twelve new patients arrived at Rotterdam’s eye clinic around 2 a.m., and some patients have already undergone surgery.

In the city of Kamperland, Zeeland, a 13-year-old boy was severely injured after igniting a Cobra-6 firework. Police reported that the teenager is in critical condition.

Autobranden and Building Damage

Many cities saw an increase in car fires, with several dozen vehicles being torched nationwide. In Alphen aan den Rijn, a car and a construction site were set ablaze, while in Enschede, a parked car and a building were targeted. In Veen, a police car was set on fire.

Supermarket roofs in Bergen op Zoom and a thatched-roof house in Kimswerd were also severely damaged by fire.

Vuurwerk Verbod

In nineteen municipalities where firework displays were banned, many residents went ahead and set off their own, with many cities seeing fireworks light up the night sky. Cities like Amsterdam, Haarlem, and Utrecht chose not to enforce the ban.

Watch the video above to see fireworks displays in these cities, despite the restrictions.

Meanwhile, after the new Year’s Eve fire in Bergen op Zoom, the supermarkets have been jointly working on temporarily restoring trading hours and stabilizing the offer. In Kimswerd, the remains of the burned-out house have been cleared away, and new construction of the damaged building is expected to begin soon.

Youth Eager for Fireworks Regulation – RTV Rijnmond

Youths Caught in Crossfire of New Year’s Eve Firework Chaos

Across the Netherlands, the streets echoed with the boom of fireworks as residents welcomed the New Year. However, the celebrations turned into a challenge for local authorities as they grappled with an increase in firework-related incidents, particularly among young people.

In Rotterdam, youth were found to be at the epicenter of the chaos. RTV Rijnmond reported that youngsters were responsible for numerous incidents, including setting off fireworks in public spaces and endangering public safety. The local police were swift to respond, issuing warnings and fines to those caught violating the rules.

The situation was not isolated to Rotterdam. In the small town of Puttershoek, Hoeksche Waard Nieuws reported that young people were also at the heart of the firework overstay. The local council swiftly responded by issuing fines to those involved, aiming to deter future incidents.

The increase in firework-related incidents has raised concerns among local authorities about public safety and the need for stricter enforcement. They have emphasized the importance of responsible firework use, reminding the public that fireworks should only be set off in designated areas and with proper safety measures in place.

As the Netherlands looks ahead to future celebrations, authorities are urging the public, especially the youth, to celebrate responsibly and safely. They are also reminding the public that fireworks are not toys and should be handled with care and respect for the law.

New Year’s Chaos in the Netherlands: A Spike in Incidents and Violence

Between the December 31st celebrations and January 1st revelry, the Netherlands witnessed a surge in incidents, with 7,500 recorded cases. This alarming figure includes over 3,600 fires, leaving emergency services with their hands full.

The increase in incidents, especially house fires and public disturbances, is a cause for concern. "The numbers are staggering," says Westerbeke, a spokesperson for the Dutch emergency services. "It seems many people see New Year’s Eve as a free-for-all to indulge in dangerous behavior, like setting off fireworks recklessly."

The chaos resulted in severe injuries, with more than 1,200 people requiring medical attention. Moreover, almost 300 agents and emergency response personnel faced assaults, putting heroes at risk.

Majority of Dutch Favor Nationwide Firework Ban

by Chief Editor December 29, 2024

Headline: Majority of Dutchiders Back Vuvuwerk Ban; Safety Concerns Prevail Ahead of New Year

Subheadline: Two-thirds of women and 74% of seniors support an outright ban on consumer fireworks, as they feel increasingly unsafe on the streets, especially during New Year’s.

Article:

A staggering 60% of Dutch people are in favor of an outright ban on consumer fireworks, according to a recent survey by RTL Nieuws’ panel of nearly 20,000 participants. The sharp increase from last year’s 55% highlights growing safety concerns, particularly among women and the elderly.

"Many women and seniors feel increasingly unsafe on the streets, especially during the New Year’s celebrations," said Gijs Rademaker, opinion pollster for RTL Nieuws. "Harsh explosions from illicit fireworks cause fear and an unsafe feeling. They also stress and frighten pets and wildlife."

The dislike for pre-New Year’s fireworks is profound, with 80% of respondents agreeing that it’s become ‘too normal’ to set off fireworks weeks before the actual celebration. "The main offenders are youths causing havoc in the neighborhood with large bangs and blasts. Many public shelters are destroyed by fireworks," one respondent lamented.

However, only 7% of people always or often report fireworks nuisance to the police or municipality, primarily due to a lack of belief in effective action or misguided priorities.

"Handhald, handhald, handhald. That’s the biggest demand from citizens," Rademaker reports. "While a ban and professional fireworks shows by professionals are also popular suggestions, most people feel the government has lost control over the fireworks problem."

In the absence of robust enforcement, 91% of respondents claim they won’t intervene when witnessing fireworks misuse, fearing confrontation or even violence. "Speaking up about fireworks could get you beaten or victimized. It happened to my neighbor," one respondent revealed.

Plastic surgeons recently raised the alarm about the rising number of young fireworks victims, with cases of severe injuries and amputations on the rise.

"My colleagues and I see an increasing number of young patients with severe injuries from illicit fireworks each year," said plastic surgeon Ernst Smits. "It’s unnecessary and life-altering, all for a moment of entertainment."

In a rare confession, only 1% of respondents admitted to using illicit fireworks, but 36% saw it among their neighbors or friends. For them, it’s ‘more beautiful and cheaper’ while downplaying the risks. "Just keep quiet and stay sober while setting them off," advised one respondent.

Meanwhile, a growing number of municipalities are introducing fireworks bans, with 19 cities and villages joining the ranks this year. However, enforcement remains spotty, and illicit fireworks continue to light up the skies.

This article is part of a series exploring the Dutch perspective on fireworks and the countdown to New Year’s.
