Title: Supporters Unfurl South Korean and U.S. Flags as President Yoon Faces Corruption Probe
In a display of solidarity and hope, supporters of impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol waved the flags of South Korea and the United States, barricading themselves to hinder his arrest ordered by the anti-corruption body.
JAKARTA, CNN Indonesia — Supporters of impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol, have been seen carrying both the South Korean and American flags, standing guard to prevent his detention by the anti-corruption agency.
Among the supporters was Ahn Young Mi, a 60-year-old woman, who stood firmly near the police barricade, holding the flags of both nations. Ahn believed these flags represented the close relationship between South Korea and the United States.
"I hope that the U.S., or President-elect Donald Trump, would come to save Yoon Suk Yeol," she said, as reported by Korea Herald, on Friday (3/1).
Other supporters passed out mini American and South Korean flags among the crowd. One supporter explained, "Displaying both flags signifies our alliance and unity." Several orators also chanted, "Trump manse!" indicating the hope for U.S. intervention in the matter.
The support for conservative groups is intertwined with Korea’s history and its relationship with the United States. During the Korean War (1950-1953), the U.S. played a pivotal role in assisting South Korea to resist the spread of communism from North Korea. For conservative supporters, the U.S. is seen as a champion of freedom.
Despite this historical context, Yoon is currently under investigation for declaring martial law on December 3 and is accused of insurrection and abuse of power. The Corruption Investigation Office (CIO) has attempted to summon Yoon three times without success. After Yoon failed to appear, the CIO requested a warrant for his arrest.
Earlier today, CIO officers attempted to arrest Yoon at his residence, but were met with thousands of riot police and supporters. After negotiations, the attempted arrest was called off due to safety concerns. The CIO has stated they will retry the arrest next week, on January 6.
