Biden Proclaims Bald Eagle as Official U.S. National Bird
In a move that solidifies an enduring American icon, President Joe Biden signed into law on Christmas Eve the designation of the Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) as the official national bird of the United States. The law, previously approved by Congress in early December, demonstrates a commitment to honoring the nation’s historical symbols.
The Bald Eagle, also known as the American Eagle or White-Headed Eagle, has long been a symbol of American sovereignty, appearing on the Great Seal of the United States since 1782. The Great Seal depicts the eagle with wings spread, known as "display" in heraldic terms, holding a bundle of 13 arrows in its left talon and an olive branch in its right, symbolizing both strength and peace. The eagle’s head is turned toward the olive branch, signifying a preference for peace.
While the Bald Eagle had been unofficially recognized as the national bird, its official designation was a significant step. Preston Cook, co-chair of the National Bird Initiative from the National Eagle Center, led the legislative effort alongside bipartisan lawmakers, including Senator Amy Klobuchar.
The Bald Eagle’s presence is emblazoned on the presidential flag, the Speaker’s mace, military insignias, and billions of one-dollar bills, according to a statement from the Department of Veterans Affairs congratulating the initiative. Despite its ubiquitous presence, the bird had lacked official recognition as a national emblem until now.
Historically, the Bald Eagle has faced adversity. Once on the brink of extinction due to hunting, pollution, and habitat destruction, its numbers have rebounded significantly. From a low of just 417 breeding pairs in 1963, the population has now grown to over 71,400 pairs across the continent, according to data from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Migratory Bird Program.
President Biden’s hyperactivity on Christmas Eve saw him sign 50 bills, including the Bald Eagle’s official designation, as his presidential term comes to a close on January 20, with Donald Trump set to assume the presidency. Other signed bills include Paris Hilton’s initiative to protect vulnerable youth in care institutions, a law mandating universities to disclose hazing incidents and implement prevention programs, and the Clean Up DC Act, which prevents corrupt legislators from receiving pensions.
