Authorities in Buenos Aires are searching for 16 prisoners who escaped from a jail in Liniers on Monday night. They tunneled their way out through a hole in the wall of the jail’s courtyard.

La.extract The alarm was raised on the night of Monday, December 24, around 10 pm, when authorities discovered that 17 inmates had escaped from the Liniers jail in Buenos Aires. According to official sources, there were 58 inmates under the care of just 4 police officers, and the escape was facilitated by a gap in the wall of one of the jail’s courtyards.
In response to the incident, police forces have launched an extensive search operation to recapture the 16 remaining escapees, as one of them had already been apprehended. Additionally, an internal investigation has been initiated to determine the causes and responsibilities behind the escape.
The 17 fugitives are mostly Argentine nationals, with six being Chilean citizens. Half of them reside in the Province of Buenos Aires, and five were serving sentences in city prisons. Their crimes range from aggravated theft to more serious offenses such as attempted homicide. Among them is Matías Daniel Petrarca, a 25-year-old Argentine with a registered address in Flores, who is wanted for attempted homicide.
Authorities have provided a list of the 17 fugitives, complete with photographs and details about their criminal records and addresses.

In response to the incident, Buenos Aires security minister Waldo Wolf announced the removal of the top brass of the Buenos Aires police force on Tuesday, following a meeting with Buenos Aires mayor Jorge Macri. The outgoing officials, Chief Pablo Kisch and Deputy Chief Jorge Azzolina, had been appointed in May. They have been replaced by Comisario General Diego Casaló and Comisario General Carla Mangiameli, respectively.
Minister Wolf stated that an investigation is underway to determine the responsibilities and causes of the escape. He also mentioned that they are working with the Buenos Aires General Prosecutor’s office to conduct an exhaustive internal investigation within the force.
The search and recapture of the remaining 16 fugitives continue to be the main priority for the Buenos Aires police.
