A man in Bulgaria has been released on a minor bond, just days after he was charged with causing bodily harm in a savage attack on a security guard at the Sofia Emergency Medical Center. The incident has sparked calls for tougher penalties against perpetrators targeting healthcare professionals.
On January 1st, around 10 PM, a couple in their late 30s entered the building of the emergency dispatch center, seeking medical help. However, they found no inpatient facilities, as all teams were out on calls.
Footage from the center shows the man vaulting barricades and unleashing a flurry of blows on the guard – with his hands, feet, and a chair. We reached out to the woman seen in the video, who wished to remain anonymous but condemned the violence. "We stopped by because I wasn’t feeling well. We expected a medical professional," she told us.
However, the hospital’s spokesperson, Kateryna Sunkarska, clarified, "Emergency medical services are mobile. We don’t have inpatients or consultation rooms. That’s why we’re called ‘medicine on wheels’."
Versions of events differ. While the woman claimed the guard was asleep and appeared intoxicated, leading to a 15-minute wait, the hospital denies this, stating all staff undergo alcohol checks upon entering the premises.

The assault left the 59-year-old guard with minor injuries, though hospital officials worry about his long-term psychological well-being. According to Bulgaria’s penal code, causing medium corporal injury, which includes fractured jaws or knocked-out teeth – as in this case – carries a potential prison sentence of up to six years.
The man was released on a minor bond, awaiting trial. The incident has reignited calls for stricter penalties against those assaulting healthcare workers.
