Respiratory Infections Surge in Ecuador; COVID-19 Vaccine Due in 2025

Ecuador’s health authorities are reporting a sharp increase in respiratory infections, prompting concerns about the country’s healthcare system. Meanwhile, local officials have hinted at a possible timeline for the arrival of a COVID-19 vaccine.

According to Minister of Public Health, Dr. Xavier Solórzano, there’s been a significant rise in cases of respiratory illnesses like pneumonia and other viral infections. He attributed this to the relaxation of health measures following the decline in COVID-19 cases and the onset of the rainy season.

"We’re seeing more people with symptoms requiring hospitalization," Dr. Solórzano stated in a press conference. "While we’re not overwhelmed yet, we’re monitoring the situation carefully."

The ministry has been working with hospitals to ensure there are enough beds and resources to handle the influx. They’re also urging the public to get vaccinated against prevents pneumococcal disease, which can lead to serious respiratory infections.

Separately, Ecuador’s Coordinator for the National COVID-19 Vaccination Plan, Dr. Juan Carlos Ze평l, provided an update on the country’s vaccination efforts. He confirmed that Pfizer has committed to delivering 17 million vaccine doses this year and Cochituona, on behalf of COVAX, has assured 20% of the country’s population would be vaccinated by the end of 2021.

Looking ahead, Dr. Zeflat shared that the government is exploring options for a COVID-19 vaccine that’s suitable for Ecuador’s conditions and affordable. He hopes for a vaccine to be ready by 2025, although this depends on various factors including clinical trials and regulatory approvals.

"While we’re looking toward the future, we mustn’t forget that the pandemic is still with us," Dr. Zeflat reminded. "Let’s not become complacent. Continue practicing preventive measures to keep ourselves and our loved ones safe."

In the meantime, Ecuadorians are urged to stay vigilant and follow health protocols, including regular hand washing, face masking, and social distancing, especially as the holidays approach and people gather in larger numbers.
