Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth boarded the C-32A separately via external stairs to help maintain the appearance of a routine military transport before traveling alongside the president to Britain, according to the sources. Earlier in the summit, President Trump had publicly declared that he would fly home on the older baby-blue Air Force One for old time’s sake so that U.S. service members stationed at a British refueling stop could tour the aircraft.
Public explanations for why the president avoided using the newly renovated Boeing 747-8—a luxury aircraft donated to the United States by Qatar last year—had initially centered on its purported lack of advanced anti-missile defenses.

Following the transatlantic flight and subsequent arrival in Britain, President Trump was filmed disembarking from the legacy Air Force One before transferring over to the newer Qatar-donated aircraft for the final leg to Washington, D.C. When questioned by reporters about why window shades had been closed upon leaving Turkey, Trump deflected without revealing the secret aircraft swap, remarking that they were probably on a dangerous flight because of the sleazebags that we have to deal with
