Trump Promises to Lift Biden‘s Offshore Drilling Ban Ahead of Inauguration
In a recent radio interview, outgoing President Donald Trump has vowed to rescind President-elect Joe Biden’s offshore drilling ban as one of his final acts in office. Trump, who will leave the White House on January 20, expressed his intention to undo Biden’s executive order immediately upon his departure.
Biden, who takes office on Wednesday, has previously announced a sweeping ban on new oil and gas leases in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, as well as parts of the Gulf of Mexico and Alaska’s Arctic region, protecting over 670 million acres of public lands and waters. The incoming President also aims to prioritize clean energy and combat climate change.
Trump, a staunch supporter of the fossil fuel industry, had previously expressed designs to expand offshore drilling, particularly in the Gulf of México and the Arctic. During his 2016 campaign, Trump also voiced support for rolling back fuel-efficiency standards for vehicles.
Before Biden’s inauguration, Trump is set to host a large event on January 19, which has been speculated as an attempt to underline his grips on power despite his election loss.
