Trump Denied Delay in Hush Money Case; Sentencing Imminent

New York: The legal saga surrounding former President Donald Trump and his alleged hush money payments took a significant turn this week. Trump had sought to delay the sentencing in the case, but his request was firmly rejected by a New York judge.

Trump’s attorney argued that due to his recent election as president, the case should be put on hold. However, Judge Juan Merchan of the New York Court slammed this argument, stating that the case would proceed as scheduled, with sentencing expected on January 10.

The former president could face up to four years in jail, but given his status as a former and potential future president, a jail sentence seems unlikely. Trump is expected to appear in court personally or virtually on the day of sentencing.

Trump’s legal team has maintained that the case’s allegations are baseless and stem from business dealings unrelated to his presidency. The court has previously ruled that Trump’s presidential immunity does not extend to crimes committed prior to his inauguration.

The current case centers around payments made to adult film actress Stormy Daniels in 2016, which Trump’s legal team initially claimed were for legitimate business purposes. The judge, however, ruled that Trump’s payments were part of a scheme to silence Daniels ahead of the 2016 presidential election.

Regardless of the verdict, Trump will make history as the first former president to stand trial for a crime.
