Trump’s Pick for Swiss Ambassador: Callista Gingrich

Title: Trump Announces New Ambassadorial Appointments; Revives Greenland Buy Idea

In a series of announcements on Sunday, former President Donald Trump revealed his intentions to nominate figures from his previous administration to key ambassadorial roles. Among the picks is his decision to appoint Callista Gingrich, his former ambassador to the Vatican, as the new U.S. ambassador to Switzerland.

Gingrich, the spouse of former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, has been a staunch ally of Trump. During the Republican National Convention this summer, she lauded Trump’s appointment of three Supreme Court justices, stating they were committed to protecting religious freedom. She also accused President Joe Biden of attacking religious liberties.

Trump’s other appointments include:

  • Mauricio Claver-Carone, who served as the chief of staff for Western Hemisphere Affairs during Trump’s first term, as the new special envoy for the Americas at the State Department.

  • Ken Howery, co-founder of PayPal and Trump’s current ambassador to Sweden, as the next U.S. ambassador to Denmark.

However, it was Trump’s decision to nominate Howery that brought back a controversial idea from his previous term – purchasing Greenland from Denmark. In a post on social media, Trump emphasized the strategic importance of owning Greenland, stating it was "absolutely necessary" for U.S. national security and global freedom.

Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, has been a source of humor and diplomatic tension since Trump first suggested the idea in 2019. Danish officials swiftly rejected the offer, and former Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen called the suggestion "absurd." Nevertheless, Trump’s renewed interest in the idea has sparked fresh dialogue about U.S.-Danish relations and Arctic geopolitics.
