Two people were fatally shot Friday morning at a residence on Panoramic Way in the Oakland Hills near the UC Berkeley campus, according to police. Responding officers discovered the victims shortly before 11 a.m. and administered life-saving measures before firefighters arrived at the scene.
Emergency Response on Panoramic Way
Berkeley police officers rushed to the 400 block of Panoramic Way at approximately 10:48 a.m. on Friday, October 2, 2026, after receiving a report of gunfire in the neighborhood. The winding, heavily forested street straddles the border between Berkeley and Oakland in the hills overlooking the university campus.
When officers arrived at the residential property, they located two individuals suffering from critical gunshot wounds. Responding personnel immediately initiated life-saving measures in the driveway and home until fire department officials arrived to take over medical care.
Emergency crews flooded the hillside neighborhood as investigators secured the perimeter. Aerial footage from local news broadcasts showed a heavy police presence with patrol vehicles lining the narrow road, while emergency personnel gathered near the residential structure at the center of the investigation.
Oakland Police Lead Investigation into Double Fatality
Although initial emergency calls were handled by the Berkeley Police Department, authorities confirmed that the incident falls under the jurisdiction of the Oakland Police Department as the lead investigative agency. Panoramic Way sits directly along the municipal dividing line, complicating the initial response while placing the case squarely in Oakland’s investigative hands.
Public Information Officer Byron White confirmed the initial call response from Berkeley authorities. Both victims ultimately succumbed to their injuries at the scene, as police later confirmed that both had died from their wounds.
Investigators have not yet released additional details concerning what precipitated the shooting. Authorities have not announced whether a suspect is in custody or if an active manhunt is underway in the surrounding hills.

Because the shooting occurred in the immediate vicinity of the university, the UC Berkeley Police Department reported that there were no known or ongoing threats to the campus community following the incident.
