Ukraine‘s Acting Customs Chief Facing charges for Undeclared Kyiv Home
The National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) has announced suspicions against the acting head of the State Customs Service (GTS). The official is accused of not declaring a house in the Kyiv region between 2021 and 2023.
While the suspect’s name has not been disclosed, the position of acting GTS chief is currently held by Sergei Zvyagintsev. Between 2021 and 2023, Vyacheslav Demchenko served as the acting head.
According to the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAP), the suspect failed to report a 236.8 sq.m. residential property and the land it’s on in their declarations for those years. The property, valued at over $100,000, was formally registered under the suspect’s father-in-law, but investigators believe the official and their family are the actual owners.
The acting chief is suspected of violating Article 366-2, Part 1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine – "Providing False Information in a Declaration." Penalties for this offense include:
- Fines ranging from 51,000 to 68,000 Ukrainian Hryvnias (UAH).
- Community service ranging from 150 to 240 hours.
- Restriction of liberty for up to 2 years, with a potential ban on holding certain positions or engaging in specific activities for up to 3 years.
