A viral video shared by a foreign tourist has highlighted the accelerating coastal abrasion at Kuta Beach, sparking widespread concern among residents and international visitors. The footage, uploaded by the account @smithersgnome17, depicts seawater encroaching upon the coastline and reaching the jogging track in several areas.
In the video, the uploader expressed deep concern, writing, “Very sad for Kuta Beach,” and warning that the beach could disappear if the current rate of erosion persists.
Infrastructure Damage and Environmental Impact
The erosion has led to a visible retreat of the shoreline, resulting in the degradation of public infrastructure. Reports indicate that sections of the coastal jogging track have tilted, collapsed, or vanished entirely after being struck by powerful waves.
The scale of the impact is significant, with the affected coastline stretching approximately 5.3 kilometres. The current rate of abrasion is estimated to be roughly two metres per year.
This environmental decline is particularly critical given that Kuta Beach is one of Bali’s premier tourist destinations, renowned for its tourism facilities, expansive coastline, and sunset views that attract both domestic and international travelers.
Local Reactions and Alleged Causes
The social media post triggered a wave of reactions from the public. One netizen questioned the speed of the loss, writing, “Is that serious? Crazy, the beach sand is eroding so rapid that the beach is no longer visible.”
Some residents have linked the worsening conditions to regional development. One individual, born and raised in Kuta, recalled a time when the beach was in much better condition for activities like football. This resident suggested that erosion intensified following reclamation efforts carried out by the airport, stating, “It’s really sad to see my home like this.”
Official Response and Mitigation Efforts
I Nyoman Arya Arimbawa, the Kuta Beach Tourist Attraction Manager, confirmed that the beach is currently in “quite terrible shape.” Speaking to RRI.CO.ID on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, Arimbawa noted that while abrasion is not a new phenomenon, it has worsened recently due to high waves during the peak of the full moon.
“The past few weeks, especially during the peak of the full moon, saw quite high waves, and some areas looked critical,” Arimbawa stated.
Current Management Strategies
To combat the loss of land, authorities have implemented several measures:

- Breakwaters: Structures have been installed in the southern portion of the beach to leisurely erosion and reduce the impact of waves, though their long-term effectiveness remains uncertain.
- Sand Replenishment: As a temporary mitigation step, sand is being dredged from offshore areas and returned to the shoreline to protect infrastructure and maintain the beach area.
Future Outlook
The long-term stability of the coastline may depend on further intervention. Local authorities are currently awaiting additional programs from the central government to address the crisis. If mitigation efforts prove insufficient or if seasonal wave changes and high tides continue to intensify, the beach area could continue to shrink, potentially threatening further public facilities along the coast.
