A viral social media video depicting a man driving recklessly within the Kruger National Park has sparked widespread outrage and prompted a formal response from SANParks, which has warned that the individual will face serious consequences once identified.
According to Rey Thakhuli, SANParks’ general manager for communications, the footage captures the driver engaging in dangerous and unlawful behavior. Thakhuli stated that the individual was seen operating a vehicle recklessly, ignoring officially closed roads and unlawfully crossing rivers within the protected conservation area.
“Such behaviour demonstrates a blatant disregard for conservation regulations, public safety, environmental protection measures and the authority of park management. The organisation wishes to make it plainly clear that conduct of this nature will not be tolerated and will be dealt with the seriousness it deserves,” Thakhuli said.
Environmental and Legal Implications
The significance of these violations extends beyond simple traffic infractions. Thakhuli emphasized that protected areas are governed by strict environmental legislation, specifically the National Environmental Management Act and the National Environmental Management Protected Areas Act. These laws are designed to prohibit activities that undermine conservation efforts, damage ecosystems, endanger public safety, or threaten biodiversity.
The organization noted that road closures are not arbitrary; they are implemented for operational, environmental, and safety reasons, particularly to manage wildlife movement, poor road conditions, and flooding.
Thakhuli warned that reckless driving and the disregard of road closures in these areas not only risk the lives of the individuals involved but also compromise visitor safety, damage sensitive ecosystems, and endanger wildlife and infrastructure.
Investigation and Disciplinary Action
SANParks has confirmed that efforts are currently underway to trace and identify the driver. The organization is also addressing internal failures; gate officials who appear in the footage allegedly encouraging the driver’s behavior will face disciplinary action for violating staff conduct policies and park regulations.
