Wildfires Near Paris: Evacuations and Travel Disruptions Reported

Wildfires near Fontainebleau have scorched 800 hectares, forcing evacuations and triggering the deployment of waterbombing planes from southern France to the Paris region.

The Shift in Fire Risk Geography

The deployment of aircraft from the south of France to the Fontainebleau region marks a change in how French authorities manage wildfire threats. Eric Brocardi of the national federation of firemen confirmed this was the first time such resources were diverted from the typically hotter, drier south to the Paris area.

Infrastructure and Public Safety Challenges

The fires near Fontainebleau have disrupted critical national infrastructure, including the A6 motorway—a primary artery connecting northern and southern France. Train lines in the region have also faced significant delays. In the nearby village of Vaudoue, 15 homes required emergency evacuation as 400 firefighters, supported by two waterbombing planes, two helicopters, and an observation aircraft, worked to contain the flames.

Climate Change and Industrial Vulnerability

The current heatwave gripping Western Europe has implications beyond forest management. Scientists from the World Weather Attribution group state that recent heatwaves across the continent would have been “virtually impossible” without the influence of climate change.
