Mount Raung, a volcano situated on the border of East Java’s Bondowoso, Jember, and Banyuwangi regencies, has erupted, spewing a column of ash up to 2,000 meters above its peak. Following the eruption, residents of Sumberwringin, Bondowoso started to feel the impact of the volcanic ash.
In response, the local sub-district government quickly distributed face masks to the affected residents in Sumberwringin village. The initial distribution involved approximately 650 masks, given to those passing through the village’s market area, where the ash was particularly noticeable.
Camat Sumberwringin, Probo Nugroho, confirmed the distribution, stating, "We have distributed around 650 face masks to our residents so far." He added that the masks were provided to help alleviate the discomfort caused by the volcanic ash.
While the eruption is currently categorized as mild, authorities urge residents to remain calm and vigilant. Probo Nugroho noted, "We have taken initial steps to address the situation and await further guidance from the local disaster management agency (BPBD) and Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) regarding any changes in Mount Raung’s condition."
Residents in several villages, including Sumber Wringin, Rejoagung, Tegal Jati, Sukosari Kidul, and Sumber Gading, have reported feeling the effects of the volcanic ash. Despite the ongoing eruption, visual observations of the ash cloud are currently hindered by thick cloud cover and rain.
Earlier reports indicated that Mount Raung began experiencing minor eruptions earlier today, releasing a white smoke column and volcanic ash. The volcano, with a peak height of approximately 3,332 meters above sea level, is known for its significant historical eruptions.
