Health authorities are urging residents to maintain basic preventive habits, including frequent handwashing, mask-wearing, and heightened personal hygiene practices when traveling abroad.
The situation follows a fatal pediatric case recorded earlier in the year. According to the Centre for Health Protection, a seven-year-old boy with no prior chronic health conditions died after contracting influenza A. The child developed initial cold symptoms on July 27, 2026, and ran a fever by August 1, 2026. His condition worsened rapidly by August 3, 2026, leading to his death the following day from influenza A complicated by shock and encephalopathy. A preliminary investigation confirmed the boy had received the 2025/26 seasonal influenza vaccination and had no recent travel history during his incubation period. Kwan Yat-wah explained that antibody levels from seasonal vaccinations typically wane over time, approximately six months after campaigns begin.
The government confirmed that the family doctor vaccine procurement pilot program will continue into the 2026/27 season.
