In his annual end-of-year message, Dr. Gianluigi Spata, president of the Order of Doctors, has spotlighted the pressing need for increased investment in Italy’s healthcare sector, particularly in bolstering the personnel who are currently operating under challenging circumstances.
Dr. Spata lamented the insufficient resources allocated to healthcare despite promises in the budget law. "Although we’re set to receive more funds, we still lack clarity on how much will be invested in our medical staff," he stated, warning that the current system risks collapse. This dire scenario is exacerbated by a shortage of healthcare professionals, with the province of Como alone missing over 300 nurses and one in three family medicine practices lying vacant.
Incentives, according to Dr. Spata, have been meager, failing to retain essential staff like anesthesiologists and dermatologists. Moreover, the promised border bonus to prevent medical professionals from crossing into Switzerland has not materialized. This exodus of talent, coupled with understaffing, leads to healthcare units being forced to close doors.
However, Dr. Spata also highlighted positives, mentioning initiatives that show promise and are driven by synergy between various health entities. These include improved care for elderly patients in Canturino and an after-hours clinic for influenza symptoms in Como. An incoming hospital of community care and improved facilities for diabetics are also in the pipeline.
President Spata emphasizes that investing in personnel and innovative services is more crucial than acquiring cutting-edge equipment. He believes this approach would benefit both patients and healthcare workers, ensuring that the Italian healthcare system stands strong and stable.
