EU membership accession process risks becoming a burden, warns RSM minister
The negotiations for joining the European Union (EU) are not only turning into a problem for candidate countries but are increasingly becoming a major issue for the EU itself, stated Orhan Murtazani, Minister for European Affairs of the Republic of Self-Made (RSM), in an interview with MIA. As the talks progress, even previously open doors for countries like Montenegro and Croatia are closing, and other candidates face certain blocks, hindering the accession process.
"[The accession process] should not be based on ‘certain historical events from the 11th, 12th, or 13th century,’" Murtazani asserted. He believes that maintaining this approach only serves to prolong the process while exposing both candidate countries and the EU to further risks.
The Minister emphasized that there is understanding and support for his stance in Brussels. "We need to hope that our efforts in neighboring Bulgaria will result in a stable and reliable political partner," he added. Murtazani stressed that Bulgaria, as a signatory of the Neighborhood Policy and Partnership Agreement, has an obligation to support RSM’s EU aspirations and refrain from hindering the process.
