Byron Donalds Calls for New GOP Healthcare Policy for 2028

Republicans Draft 2028 Healthcare Policies

“We need market-centered healthcare policy that will stabilize prices in healthcare and drive down costs in healthcare,” Florida Gov.-elect Byron Donalds said on Fox News.

Donalds told Larry Kudlow on “Sunday Morning Futures” that the Republican Party must craft its own healthcare policy items ahead of the 2028 election. Republican lawmakers on Capitol Hill are holding numerous debates on the issue after previous leaders avoided taking it on.

“And Republicans, I think, for ’28 and beyond, we need to step into that breach and say, ‘Here’s how you actually get it done on healthcare,’” Donalds said. He warned that continuing under Democratic policies will price out hardworking American families.

Costs and Progressive Single-Payer Pushes

Donalds pointed to New York Times reporting that ObamaCare premiums will increase by an average of 13 percent in 2027. He added that the U.S. has operated under Democratic healthcare policy for the past 15 years, leaving premiums, deductibles, and overall costs out of control.

The Florida Republican also criticized Bernie Sanders and other left-leaning lawmakers for pushing single-payer healthcare. Meanwhile, Democrats made healthcare affordability a central campaign issue by promising to restore enhanced Affordable Care Act subsidies and roll back Medicaid cuts passed under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act.

Those campaign promises led to a strong voter rebuke of the GOP health agenda and the Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) platform touted by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Recent victories by progressives like Sen.-elect Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan have fueled renewed discussions about Medicare for All.

Americans favor single government health plans as El-Sayed offers bipartisan cooperation

A KFF poll published in September showed that two-thirds of Americans favor a single government health plan. President Trump entered office having told voters he possessed the framework for a healthcare plan after his previous proposal failed during his first term.
