Habagat Brings Rains Across the Philippines as Mindanao Swelters

The southwest monsoon, locally known as “Habagat,” continues to affect much of the Philippines while bringing heavy rains to several northern regions, according to the state weather bureau Pagasa (Philippine, Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration).

In its 5 p.m. weather forecast, Pagasa forecaster Benison Estareja stated that while the prevailing monsoon remains weak, heavy rains could strike overnight in the Ilocos and Cordillera regions, as well as in Batanes and Cagayan provinces. Meanwhile, Northern Mindanao—including Caraga and Soccsksargen, encompassing South Cotabato, Cotabato City, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani, and General Santos City—faces overnight rains driven by the trough of a low-pressure area located east of Mindanao.

Monsoon Impacts and Regional Weather Systems

Most of the country remains under the influence of the southwest monsoon, with the notable exception of Mindanao, where warm weather is expected over the next 12 hours. State forecasters are actively tracking three separate weather systems simultaneously.

Among these systems is Typhoon Saudel, which is currently moving westward and could enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility by Monday, where it will be locally named “Obet.” According to Estareja, Typhoon Saudel could intensify the southwest monsoon, potentially resulting in light to moderate and occasionally heavy rains across Ilocos, Zambales, Abra, Cagayan, Benguet, and Apayao provinces.
