Breaking: Israel Detains Director of Gaza‘s Kamal Adwan Hospital Amidst Ongoing Conflict
In a escalation of tensions, Israeli forces have detained the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health. The World Health Organization (WHO) had previously announced that the hospital had ceased operations following Israeli strikes.
"Occupying forces have taken into custody dozens of medical staff from Kamal Adwan Hospital, including director Hossam Abu Safiyeh, for interrogation," the Health Ministry, controlled by Hamas, stated in a release reported by AFP on Saturday, December 28, 2024.
The Palestinian Civil Defense also confirmed Abu Safiyeh’s detention, adding that Ahmed Hassan al-Kahlout, the director of the civil defense for the northern Gaza Strip, was also among those apprehended.
Mahmud Bassal, spokesperson for the Palestinian Civil Defense, stated to AFP, "The occupation has destroyed the medical, humanitarian, and civil defense systems in the north, rendering them unusable."
Previously, on Friday, December 27, the Israeli military announced they had launched an operation in the area of Kamal Adwan Hospital, alleging it was "the main stronghold of terrorist organizations." However, Hamas dismissed these claims, insisting that no militants were present at the hospital and alleging that Israeli forces had raided the facility on Friday.
The dire situation at Kamal Adwan Hospital follows previous reports of discontinued services due to the intensity of the conflict. The WHO had reported that the hospital’s ability to provide critical healthcare services had been compromised.
