U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has sensationally suggested that Russian President Vladimir Putin may have come close to using nuclear weapons during the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. In an interview with the Financial Times, Blinken implied that China might have played a role in dissuading Putin from resorting to nuclear options.
Blinken revealed that the U.S. had analyzed the likelihood of Putin employing atomic weapons, with the probability climbing from a mere 5% to as high as 15%. "Nothing is more serious than nuclear weapons when the hypothetical increases to this magnitude," he underscored.
However, Peter Viggo Jakobsen, a lecturer at the Danish Defense Academy, cautioned against placing too much emphasis on such probabilistic estimates. He posited, "To my knowledge, there are no indications that Putin was poised to press the button, and that China stepped in at the last moment. That’s not how this should be understood."
Jakobsen acknowledged China’s interest in maintaining global peace, given the significant economic implications for Beijing in any deterioration of relations between the West and Russia. "The worse the situation between the West and Russia, the worse it is for China’s trade with the West," he said.
While Russia and China are allied, Beijing has refrained from directly engaging in the conflict, unlike North Korea’s involvement on Russia’s behalf. Jakobsen noted that directly aiding Russia could implicate China in strict sanctions, potentially hampering its economy and exports.
