Heading: Urgent Search Continues for Missing 13-Year-Old Boy with Down Syndrome in Bulgarian Village
In a desperate search that has spanned over a week, no trace of 13-year-old Nikolai from the Gurkovsko village of Konaре has been found. Despite the relentless efforts of police, gendarmerie, and a multitude of volunteers who have scoured the area throughout the day, the teenager remains missing.
Yesterday, in an eerie turn of events, the family’s dog was foundClean and unscathed in the village, leading Nikolai’s mother, Danka Ilieva, to believe that her son has been kidnapped. The dog, which vanished alongside Nikolai, was found near their home, its appearance pristine despite the recent rainy weather.
Resident Stanislav Stefanov, the village mayor, was alerted to the dog’s presence by its frantic barking. Upon identifying the animal as the Ilievs’, he immediately called the parents. The dog was then taken to the nearby dam, guided by Nikolai’s mother and the volunteers. Unfortunately, the search yielded no new leads.
Ilieva, clutching onto a thread of hope, insists, "The dog is too clean to have been roaming the forest or any other place. It was dumped somewhere and found its way back. My son has been kidnapped." Despite the slim chances, Ilieva remains hopeful, asserting, "I can’t think of anything else. He’s been gone for a whole week, and they can’t find him in the village. What else am I supposed to think?"
Today, multiple police officers and volunteers reconvened to meticulously search the village, the forest, and the area surrounding the dam. Specialized tracking and rescue dogs were also deployed. Divers previously searched the dam but found no evidence.
Nikolai, who has Down syndrome, was last seen on December 17. His mother recounts that he went missing in mere minutes and is trusting by nature, making him vulnerable to strangers. Authorities from the Ministry of Interior assure the public that the search will continue tirelessly until Nikolai is found.
