The Congo’s Enigmatic Disease: A Potential Combination of Lung Infections, Malnutrition, and Malaria

by Chief Editor

A mysterious illness in the Democratic Republic of Congo has been identified as likely a combinations of various respiratory infections, including influenza, World Health Organization (WHO)”>COVID-19, and pneumonia, as well as malaria, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported based on preliminary laboratory findings. The unknown disease had raised alarms after claiming the lives of tens of people in a short period. Between late October and early December, nearly 900 cases were reported in Congo’s Kwango province, with at least 48 fatalities.

The vast majority of victims were children under the age of five. Symptoms included fever, fatigue, headache, and a runny nose. Acute malnutrition exacerbating the condition was also reported by the WHO. “This incident underscores the heavy burden of common infectious diseases among vulnerable populations that suffer from food insecurity,” the WHO stated. It emphasized the need to improve access to healthcare and address underlying causes of vulnerability, particularly malnutrition.

The affected area in Congo is remote and difficult to access, with no laboratory in the province, requiring samples to be transported to the capital, Kinshasa. Teams travel for approximately two days by road to reach Kwango from Kinshasa, and during the rainy season, these journeys become even more challenging.
