Headline: North Korean Soldiers in Ukraine’s Kurgan Region Combat Drunkenness and Heavy Losses

In a surprising turn of events, the Main Intelligence Directorate (GUR) of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry has revealed that soldiers from North Korea, fighting alongside Russian forces, have been struggling with a severe drop in morale and heavy casualties in the Kurgan region. The GUR also disclosed that these troops have been engaging in excessive drinking, even during the New Year celebrations, contravening orders from their superiors.
The GUR’s official website reported that soldiers from North Korea, sent to bolster Russian troops against Ukrainian forces, have been facing significant attrition. In an unexpected lapse in military discipline, many of these soldiers were observed consuming alcohol excessively on New Year’s Eve, including those directly involved in combat operations.
"North Korean soldiers’ morale has slumped significantly," a GUR spokesperson confirmed. "Despite a ban on alcohol consumption, numerous instances of intoxication were documented on New Year’s night, including among active combatants."
According to the GUR, the North Korean military has been concealing the true extent of its losses from their higher command. In response, Russian commanders have been deploying fresh units from North Korea to reinforce frontline positions. On December 31, 2024, and January 1, 2025, groups of North Korean soldiers were spotted being moved to critical areas around Ulanok, Fanasyevki, and Chernaya单Augka in the Kurgan region.
This news comes on the heels of persistent reports of North Korean military losses and water shortages in the Kurgan region. Prior to this, Ukraine’s special forces significantly weakened North Korean positions, eliminating over 10 soldiers in a single operation.
As the conflict in Ukraine’s Kurgan region continues to evolve, the revelations from the GUR highlight the challenges faced by North Korean troops and their impact on the broader war effort. With morale at an all-time low and casualties mounting, it remains to be seen how these soldiers will fare as the conflict progresses.
