Oliveira’s WorldSBK Debut: A Promising Start Amidst Challenges
Miguel Oliveira’s transition to the World Superbike Championship (WorldSBK) with BMW has begun with a series of impressive recovery rides, despite facing technical hurdles. After qualifying 9th, he finished 7th in the second race at the Australian round, following an 8th place finish in the first race after starting from the back of the grid.
Navigating Technical Setbacks and Wet Weather
Oliveira’s initial races highlighted his ability to overcome adversity. A quick shifter issue impacted his starting position for the second race, but he still managed a strong finish. The wet race conditions presented additional challenges, with limited visibility and complex track conditions. Despite these obstacles, Oliveira consistently demonstrated a commitment to maximizing points.
Bulega’s Dominance and the Competitive Landscape
The Australian round was largely dominated by Nicolo Bulega, securing victories in the Superpole and both races. His performance underscores the high level of competition within WorldSBK. Several incidents during the wet race, including crashes involving Yari Montella and Sam Lowes, reshaped the podium standings, ultimately benefiting Alvaro Bautista.
Oliveira’s Progress and Championship Standing
After securing 8 points in the first race, Oliveira added 9 points in the second, bringing his total to 17 points. This places him 8th in the championship standings after the first of 12 rounds, 45 points behind leader Bulega. Oliveira remains optimistic about improving his performance as he gains experience with the BMW M 1000 RR and the WorldSBK format.
Looking Ahead to Portimão
The next round of the WorldSBK championship will be held in Portimão. Oliveira anticipates further improvements to the bike and increased competitiveness, leveraging the additional preparation time available before the race.
“At Least We Scored Points in Both Races” – Oliveira Reflects
“The weekend was a progression, without a doubt. It was just a shame that qualifying dictated much of the outcome of the weekend. We made three very good recoveries, especially this morning in the Superpole Race, climbing to P9, but then a small problem with the quick shifter prevented me from having a better starting position for the second race. This afternoon we had another opportunity to fight for points and I managed to do so. Recovering from the back, in these intense rain conditions, was probably the hardest thing I had to do, because visibility was very poor and the conditions were complicated,” Oliveira stated.
“Still, we managed to stay on track, which in itself was an achievement, given the conditions, and then finish P7, very close to Danilo – we have to be happy with that. At least we scored points in both races. It’s certainly not the position where we seek to be, but given the circumstances we made the most of the situation. We’re going to Portimão with our heads held high, because we’ve done a good job improving the bike and we still have two extra days there before the race. I’m sure we’ll show much more competitiveness,” he concluded.
