Headline: President Sheinbaum Denies Gasolinazo, Announces Measures Against Overpriced Gas Stations
Article:
In her daily press conference at Palacio Nacional, President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo categorically rejected claims of a ‘gasolinazo‘ at the start of the year and announced new measures to combat abusive pricing at gas stations. She reaffirmed her administration’s commitment to not increase fuel costs during her tenure.
The president stated that the current price of Magna gasoline ranges between 23 and 24 pesos per liter, which she considered reasonable for gas station owners’ profits. However, she condemned instances where some stations were charging 28 or 29 pesos, describing these practices as unacceptable.
To tackle these issues, the Procuraduría Federal del Consumidor (PROFECO) will intensify its monitoring efforts. In gas stations found to be exceeding reasonable profit margins, a sign will be placed reading, "Do not fuel up here; they’re jacking up prices."
President Sheinbaum also addressed the evolution of fuel prices, noting that during the six-year terms of previous administrations, there were significant increases. In contrast, her administration has seen a 5.2% reduction in the real price of Magna gasoline, with a further 0.4% decrease in the first three months of her term.
Starting Monday, Cuitláhuac García, former governor of Veracruz, will join the federal government as the director of the National Center for Gas Natural Control.
