State Funeral Held for Former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh

Mantel-P.Link – In a solemn ceremony, India bid farewell to former Prime Minister (PM) Manmohan Singh, with a full state funeral in New Delhi. The national mourning period, declared by the government following Singh’s demise at 92, ended on Saturday, December 28, 2024.

Led by President Draupadi Murmu and attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, senior government officials, and military personnel, the funeral was a grand militaristic homage to the statesman who served as PM from 2004 to 2014. His Majesty Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, the King of Bhutan, also graced the occasion.

Opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi who referred to Singh as his mentor, paid their respects. Earlier, mourners gathered to honor Singh before his cremation. Decorated with floral wreaths, Singh’s body was taken to the Congress party headquarters in New Delhi.

The procession then moved towards the cremation site, accompanied by armed forces personnel, receiving a full state funeral protocol. Prime Minister Modi remembered Singh as one of the "most respected leaders" of India, while U.S. President Joe Biden mourned his passing, lauding Singh as a "true statesman."
