Nourishing on a Budget: Free, Balanced Menu Without Dairy

Headline: School Meals: The Debate Over Missing Milk on the First Day

Subhead: Despite initial omissions, priorities are shifting to ensure sustainable distribution.

JAKARTA – The newly launched school meals program, a flagship initiative of President Prabowo Subianto‘s administration, commenced on January 6, 2025. This program has been highly anticipated, with the primary concept being to provide balanced and nutritious meals to students nationwide.

On the program’s first day, 190 Satellite Units for Nutritional Services (SPPG) were operational across 26 provinces. Each SPPG is headed by an official from the National Nutrition Board. Despite the widespread enthusiasm and positive reception, one notable absence has sparked discussion: the lack of milk in some schools’ meals.

Residents of SD Negeri Kedung Badak 1 in Bogor, West Java, were surprised to find that their children’s free school meals did not include milk. The menu consisted of rice, omelette, carrots and cabbage, and bananas. The absence of milk was also noticed in Depok, where Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture, Muhaimin Iskandar, acknowledged the issue and stated that provisions would be made available gradually.

The Istana confirmed that milk is not included in every meal, with executive officer Hasan Nasbi noting that milk may be served one to two times a week. The decision to incorporate milk into the meals depends on its availability. However, with a budget of Rp10,000 per meal, officials affirm that this allocation includes milk when available.

To ensure sustainability and support local industries, the National Nutrition Board has prioritized milk distribution in regions with dairy farming. The board, headed by Dadan Hindayana, aims to reduce milk imports by promoting local production. In areas without dairy farms, other protein sources like fish and eggs can be substituted, along with alternative calcium sources.

In Jakarta, the governor’s office has stated that milk will be provided twice a week, with other meal variations to follow. To maintain diversity and quality, kusus menus will cater to regional preferences and food availability. Despite initial hurdles, the school meals program remains committed to ensuring adequate nutrition and culinary variety for Indonesian students.

Palembang Elementary Students Complaint: Nutritious Free Meal Program Limited to Only Tempeh and Tofu

by Chief Editor January 6, 2025
written by Chief Editor

Headline: Palembang‘s ‘Makan Bergizi Gratis‘ Program Launched: Students React to New School Meals

Subhead: Free Nutritious Meal Program inaugurated by President Prabowo Subianto starts in several schools in Palembang, Sumatra Selatan; students share mixed reviews about the menu.

Byline: Dai Dai

Body:

In a significant shift towards ensuring balanced nutrition for students, President Prabowo Subianto’s Free Nutritious Meal (Makan Bergizi Gratis, MBG) program kicked off today in various schools across Kota Palembang, Sumatra Selatan. Among the participating schools was SDN 25 on Jalan Inspektur Marzuki, Ilir Barat I.

The inaugural menu consisted of white rice, tofu, tempeh, stir-fried beans, and bananas. While reactions were mixed among the students, one thing was clear: the program has sparked conversation and curiosity about school meals.

Gibran, a third-grader at SDN 25, had strong feelings about the menu. "I don’t like tofu, tempeh, or stir-fried beans," he confessed. "I prefer chicken, fish, and stir-fried kangkung (water spinach)." Despite his dislike for the dishes, Gibran passively accepted his meal, stating he would take the rice home since he had already eaten breakfast.

Conversely, Queenza, another student, happily tucked into her MBG meal. "I like it because my mom often cooks this at home," she said, savoring her lunch.

SDN 25’s principal, Wiwin Purwanti, hoped that the menu could be varied to keep students engaged and interested in the meals. "Some children come to school already full from breakfast, but I hope the menu can be diversified to cater to everyone’s tastes," she added.

The meals and their portions are determined by the National Nutrition Board (Badan Gizi Nasional, BGN). The cost for TK and SD students is IDR 6,000 for ingredients, plus IDR 5,000 for transport and other miscellaneous expenses. For SMP students, the ingredients cost IDR 10,000, with another IDR 5,000 for transport and other expenses.

Kota Palembang’s Education Department Head, Adrianus Amri, revealed that the menus would rotate throughout the week. "Today it’s tofu and tempeh, but in the coming days, we’ll have fish, chicken, and beef options," he said. He also mentioned that the central kitchen for the program is provided by the BGN and is currently operational in three Ilir Barat I, Kalidoni, and Sukarami districts, with plans to collaborate with the military, local governments, and other catering services in the future.

The MBG program is set to run from Monday to Friday, serving as a significant stride towards ensuring that students in Palembang have access to balanced and nutritious meals.

Unique Lunch: Jakarta Student Receives French Fries Instead of Rice in Free Meals Program

Article:

In Jakarta, Indonesia, a second-grader at SDN 15 Slipi, West Jakarta, named Bima, recently received a unique lunch at school. Unlike his peers who typically get meals with rice, Bima’s packed lunch included French fries, beef, tofu, long beans, and orange—with no rice in sight.

The school’s principal, Yulius, disclosed that this peculiar lunch arrangement was due to Bima’s personal eating habits. "During the trial run of the school’s free, balanced meals program, we informed the food service provider about a student who doesn’t eat rice," Yulius said. As a result, Bima’s lunch box now contains French fries instead of the usual rice.

The principal expressed optimism about the free meals initiative, stating that it has helped children adopt the habit of eating breakfast regularly and has been beneficial for those who don’t usually have morning meals at home.

The free, balanced meal program, aimed at ensuring students’ adequate nutrition, started this Monday (6/1). Most students receive meals containing rice, fried chicken, tofu, long beans, and oranges. However, Bima’s unique lunch, featuring French fries instead of rice, has sparked curiosity and conversation among students and parents alike.

Article:

In a significant milestone for Indonesia’s fight against malnutrition, the long-awaited ‘Makan Bergizi Gratis’ (MBG) program has officially begun its nationwide rollout. This flagship initiative, a collaborative effort between President Prabowo Subianto and Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka, launched on Monday, January 6, in 190 locations across 26 provinces.

"This is a historic moment for Indonesia," said Hasan Nasbi, Head of Presidential Communications. "For the first time, we’re implementing a national-scale malnutrition prevention program targeting infants, schoolchildren, expecting mothers, and new mothers."

The program, part of the Prabowo-Gibran administration’s ‘Program Hasil Terbaik Cepat’ (PHTC), will operate through 190 ‘Satuan Pelayanan Pemenuhan Gizi’ (SPPG) or MBG kitchens. These kitchens will provide nutritious meals to vulnerable populations, aiming to reach 3 million beneficiaries by March 2025, with projections rising to 15 million by the end of the year.

The MBG initiative extends across all major Indonesian islands, with SPPGs in Aceh, Bali, Sumatera, Java, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Maluku, Nusa Tenggara, and Papua. In addition to fulfilling nutritional needs, the program is estimated to involve over 140 Small and Medium Enterprises (UMKM) in its supply chain, with thousands more queuing for evaluation.

With a Rp71 trillion budget, the MBG program marks an ambitious start to the Prabowo-Gibran administration’s commitment to eliminating malnutrition in Indonesia.

Article:

JAKARTA – The National Nutrition Agency (Badan Gizi Nasional) is set to launch its Free Nutritious Meals (Makan Bergizi Gratis, MBG) program on January 6, 2025. To facilitate the inauguration, 937 kitchens have been established nationwide.

Badan Gizi Nasional’s Head of Legal and Public Relations Bureau, Lalu Muhammad Iwan Mahardan, stated that these kitchens are not concentrated on Java Island but rather spread across the country, with a heavier presence outside Java. This decision reflects the program’s primary target areas: underprivileged, remote, and negligent (3T) regions.

Mahardan revealed that the initial target recipients include children, pregnant women, and breastfeeding mothers, aiming to benefit a total of 3 million individuals nationwide. Each kitchen is prepared to serve 3,000 to 3,500 beneficiaries, with a focus on students aged five and above, attending kindergarten, elementary, junior high, and high schools, as well as expectant mothers.

The head of Badan Gizi Nasional, Dadan Hindayana, has asserted that the MBG program will indeed commence on January 6, 2025. He has begun preparations to ensure a smooth launch and has mentioned that the program will be rolled out simultaneously across various regions in Indonesia. However, Dadan has yet to disclose the specific locations where the program will first take effect.

"First, I will report to the President," he said briefly.

Indonesia‘s National Nutrition Board Envisions UMKM in Free Nutritious Meal Program, Emphasizes vigilance Against Fraud

Article:

In an encouraging development for micro, small, and medium enterprises (UMKM), the Head of Indonesia’s National Nutrition Board (Badan Gizi Nasional – BGN), Dadan Hindayana, has revealed that UMKM will be a part of the ongoing Free Nutritious Meal Program. The initiative aims to ensure balanced nutrition for all while bolstering the economic landscape.

Dadan, speaking to reporters on Thursday (2/1/2025), expressed high enthusiasm from various parties regarding the program. "The interest is significant. Everyone has an equal right to participate," he stated. However, he also issued a caution, warning the public to remain vigilant against fraudulent activities targeting unsuspecting UMKM seeking to become program partners.

In recent times, several regions have reported instances of UMKM falling prey to scams promising partnerships in the Free Nutritious Meal Program. With this in mind, Dadan urges public vigilance to prevent further victimization.

Those interested in becoming program partners are advised to visit the BGN official website directly or contact them via email at [email protected] or WhatsApp at 0811110008008 for further guidance.

Additionally, Dadan confirmed that the registration process remains open until all slots are filled. "The registration will continue until all Satuan Pelayanan Pemenuhan Gizi (SPPG) positions are fully occupied," he explained.

As the program’s launch date approaches, BGN assured the public that preparations are in full swing. According to Dadan, the Free Nutritious Meal Program is set to commence on 6 January and will span across all Indonesian provinces.

"6 January is the targeted launch date. We’re actively preparing to ensure a successful rollout," said Dadan. "The program will extend to every province nationwide, with each region represented."
