Defense Ministry declassified documents on the capture of Berlin by Soviet troops :: Society :: RBC

The website of the Ministry of Defense also published an archive document in which the commander of the defense of Berlin, General Helmut Weidling, gave the order to stop the fight. He wrote that Adolf Hitler committed suicide and the German military “left alone.” The general said that the lack of heavy weapons and ammunition makes the fight pointless, and every hour “extends the terrible suffering of the civilian population of Berlin” and the wounded. According to him, everyone who dies in this struggle will “make a vain sacrifice.”

Defense Ministry declassified archival documents on the liberation of Warsaw

One of the documents says that the company of Senior Sergeant Syanov from the 756th Infantry Regiment broke into the Reichstag building first. The Nazi military tried to knock out Soviet soldiers during the day – set fire to the house and threw grenades at them. The clothes on the sergeant caught fire several times, and he had nothing to breathe. However, in the end, the company destroyed 150 German troops and captured another 300.

According to other documents, on May 2, Soviet troops captured 34 thousand German soldiers and officers. The Soviet command also dealt with the issue of providing food to the inhabitants of Berlin. The city introduced cards. 3 kg of bread, 0.5 kg of meat, almost 1.5 kg of sugar, 350 g of coffee, as well as vegetables, potatoes and dairy products were allocated for each citizen. From the documents it also follows that the command provided humanitarian assistance to other German cities, for example, Dresden, Stettin and Chemnitz.

Documents came from the funds of the Central Archive of the Ministry of Defense. The department also said that they had been published to protect and defend the historical truth, to counter the falsification of history and “attempts to revise the results of the Great Patriotic and World War II.”

The Berlin offensive began on April 16, 1945 and ended on May 2. It was conducted by three Soviet fronts – 1st Belorussian, 2nd Belorussia and 1st Ukrainian, as well as with the help of Polish troops. A week later, on May 9, the Great Patriotic War ended.

Candidate Tournament: Chess against the virus of frivolity | sports

The Candidates Tournament in Yekaterinburg (Russia) is the only world-class sports competition that continues to be in dispute (until April 4). There are very reasonable reasons – with important nuances – to believe that it should have been postponed. But it is also hopeful and symbolic that eight stars of the quintessential mental sport remain at the foot of the canyon. And even more if that situation is viewed from Spain, a world leader in educational, social and therapeutic applications of the game that teaches to think.

Bill Gates has been warning for five years that a virus can be more damaging than war. The director-general of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, insisted on it a year ago. But in Italy and Spain we have failed to see that the tragedy that had paralyzed China, where one in five human beings lives, was going to attack us sooner rather than later. Only a small minority of Spaniards foresaw the enormous risk of the feminist protests of 8-M, or that of Vox. In this context, it is better understood that the International Chess Federation (FIDE) decided at the beginning of the month that the Candidates Tournament was not postponed, although it may seem irresponsible to us with the information we have now.

When Spain declared a state of alarm, on March 14, the eight participants in the Candidates Tournament were already in Yekaterinburg, 1,500 kilometers from Moscow, at the gates of Siberia and the Urals. It is a city of 1.4 million inhabitants where at the moment there are only two diagnosed cases of COVID-19, according to official statistics. The Russian Government then canceled all international sports competitions except the Candidates Tournament. But it imposed major restrictions: no more than 50 people (players, referees, coaches, journalists, managers, etc.) at the headquarters, without an audience, which is in the same hotel that houses the players, with a dining room just for them; journalists cannot enter the gaming room or press conferences. The only non-Russian who managed to get there is the one who writes this, but with bad luck: Spain was included in the blacklist of countries while he was flying, and therefore he went from the airport to quarantine in the hotel room, from which he hopes to get rid. on Tuesday, if the second analysis is also negative.

Russians Niepómniachi and Alexeyenko greet each other at the start of their game

As expected with so many people confined at home, the audiences of the portals that broadcast the games live on the Internet have skyrocketed. And here is the bright side of FIDE’s risky decision. Encouraging a game that teaches thinking can be one of the counterweights to alleviate the tendency to idiotics. More and more people are thinking less for various reasons: a fast-paced world, the misuse of social networks, remote waste, the increase in inequality in many countries … And perhaps one day sociologists will demonstrate that this dangerous trend explains why that millions of people have democratically elected – and, in some cases, re-elected – as presidents of governments people who are not qualified to assume these responsibilities, even in countries of great relevance.

Spain will connect its image with intelligence through chess at the Universal Expo in Dubai, whose inauguration is scheduled for October 20, and in previous actions; between them, an online world school tournament that has already been called. Such a decision is supported by history and current events. The Arabs brought chess in the 9th century. Alfonso X promoted it as a tool for good coexistence between Muslims, Jews and Christians in the XIII. It was in Spain -probably in Valencia- where modern chess was born in the late 15th century, with the queen (absent in the Arabic) as the most powerful piece; and the Spanish exported it to much of America and Europe. Since 1988, Spain is every year the country that organizes more international tournaments. Ten of the 17 autonomous communities have already introduced it as an educational tool during school hours, following the recommendations of the European Parliament (2012) and the Congress of Deputies (unanimously, 2015). And there are solid experiences, as well as scientific studies, on its great utility as a gymnasium of the mind to challenge brain aging and Alzheimer’s, and also with special people: blindness and other disabilities, autism, ADHD, Down syndrome, serious mental disorders , rehabilitation of drug addicts, prisoners, unemployed, indigent, etc., as reflected in a great report from EL PAÍS SEMANAL on June 16, 2019.

Chess has been in this newspaper every day since it appeared on May 4, 1976; with a daily column and current chronicles when it only existed on paper; and with videos, blog and much more space since the digital edition exists. That 44-year-old gamble and everything explained in this article prompted me to come to Yekaterinburg despite everything, to relate how eight gladiators of the mind continue to fight under the threat of the coronavirus.

In addition to working as a journalist for EL PAÍS, Leontxo García is FIDE’s educational chess advisor and commissioner of Spain at the Universal Expo Dubai 2020

Infections that are far from coronavirus: the flu account has more than half a million deaths per year, and measles

The whole history of mankind is life side by side with bacteria, parasites and viruses. They cause infectious diseases, that is, transmitted through various kinds of contacts: through the blood, as HIV, hepatitis B and C, with insect bites like malaria, by airborne droplets like flu, tuberculosis and measles. Since the end of last year, a new type of coronavirus, 2019-nCoV, joined the group of the latter. The lack of knowledge and therefore the weak predictability of the new enemy is understandably alarming. It’s important that it doesn’t panic, since stress itself affects the immune system, doctors warn. Because of this, our basic defense against infections is weakened.

In order to be less nervous, experts advise, firstly, to take preventive measures (observe hygiene rules, visit places less crowded). Secondly, to face the facts: in fact, we have long been cohabiting with infections that take incomparably more lives than coronavirus (according to currently available data).

Moreover, infectious diseases themselves, which until the beginning of the 20th century were the main killers of people, have now given way to another leader.

– The vast majority of people today die not at all due to infections. And because of the so-called NCDs – noncommunicable diseases, – said Artem Gil, professor at the Higher School of Health Management at Sechenov University, told KP. – Among such NCDs, cardiovascular diseases (coronary heart disease, heart attacks, strokes), cancer, chronic respiratory diseases, and diabetes are leading causes of death. In general, NCDs account for at least 60–65% of deaths worldwide. And in Of Russia – 90%.

Such diseases are not transmitted from person to person. And while their distribution is largely dependent on the people themselves. From our way of life. Judge for yourself: according to the World Health Organization, about 9 million people a year die from coronary heart disease (CHD), and about 6 million die from strokes. While the deadliest infection – tuberculosis – kills up to 1.3 million patients. Moreover, in the case of coronary heart disease and strokes, we essentially drive ourselves into the grave. It has been proven that the main risk factors for the development of these diseases are smoking, a sedentary lifestyle, overeating and alcohol abuse.

Most important for Russians are HIV and tuberculosis

– Among the infectious diseases for Russia, the most relevant and dangerous are HIV and tuberculosis, – says a professor at the Graduate School of Health Management at Sechenovskiy University Artem Gil. – The prevalence of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis strains is increasing. Because of this, the effectiveness of treatment remains at a rather low level. Tuberculosis now affects people regardless of their socio-economic status.

At the same time, HIV infection in our country has gone beyond the limits of traditional risk groups (drug addicts, women of easy virtue) and spreads mainly through heterosexual sexual contacts, remind infectious disease specialists. Therefore, doctors advise against neglecting HIV testing. This can be done for free at the AIDS prevention and control centers that operate in each region. Medical TV presenter, ex-head doctor of the Kremlin Hospital, cardiologist Alexander Myasnikov:

– From the complications of influenza in the world, up to 650 thousand people die every year, measles – more than 120 thousand, from cervical cancer, which develops due to the human papillomavirus (HPV) – 270 thousand. Vaccines for these diseases are, tested and safe. However, the Russians are still in no hurry to do these really necessary vaccinations.

“Like a war”: doctors against the coronavirus. In China, more than 170 people have died from coronavirus. Among them are doctors fighting the infection … Moreover, doctors are dying not only because of 2019-nCoV
