Winter Storms Wreak Havoc on Norwegian Airports; Bergen‘s Flesland Airport Hit Hard

Article:

Norway’s airports have faced significant challenges over the weekend, with heavy snow and ice leading to closures, delays, and disruptions. Bergen’s Flesland Airport, one of Norway’s busiest, was especially hard hit, causing ripples of disruption throughout the country’s air travel network.

According to Catrina Storm Røsaasen, spokesperson for Avinor, the state-owned operator of most Norwegian civilian airports, the difficulties at Flesland have resulted in multiple closures for snow clearing operations throughout the weekend. The most recent closure occurred on Sunday at around 4:30 PM, with operations resuming approximately an hour later.

These issues in Bergen have had a domino effect on other major airports, including Oslo’s Gardermoen, Trondheim’s Værnes, and Stavanger’s Sola. Travelers at these airports have also faced numerous delays and cancellations.

Røsaasen explained that when a major airport like Flesland encounters recurrent disruptions, the impacts are felt throughout the aviation network. "When one of the country’s largest airports struggles, it’s like a stone in a pond – the ripples spread far and wide," she said.

While Sunday was particularly challenging for Bergen, Røsaasen noted that other airports, including Trondheim and several locations on Norway’s west coast, were also affected earlier in the weekend.

As snow continued to fall throughout Sunday, the heavy snowfall created substantial obstacles for air, road, and rail transportation. Throughout the weekend, these weather conditions posed significant challenges to transportation across Norway.

Travelers are advised to check the latest updates on their flights and allow for extra time and flexibility in their travel plans.
