Heading to Engagement Level: "2025 Marks a Tipping Point in Belgium‘s Anti-Smoking Quest: Expert Warns of Persistent Health Inequality"

While 2025 is set to usher in a wave of government-driven anti-smoking measures, an expert at Belgium’s Cancer Foundation warns that the battle is far from won. Suzanne Gabriels, a tobacco prevention expert, expresses concerns that these upcoming regulative changes may not be enough.

Smoking rates have indeed been declining, particularly among higher socioeconomic classes. However, the same cannot be said for marginalized groups who face systemic disadvantages. "We’re seeing much higher smoking prevalence among those who struggle to make ends meet," Gabriels explains.

This disparity results in a stark health divide. Smoking, a significant risk factor for numerous diseases, exacerbates existing health inequalities. "It makes the already vulnerable even more so," Gabriels adds.

Only time will tell if the 2025 initiatives will bridge this health gap. Until then, Belgium’s smoking prevention advocacy continues, with a focused effort on reaching and supporting the communities most affected.
