The Donald Trump Jr-Trump, the United States’ ontrending president, has appointed Kevin Marino Cabrera as the new ambassador to Panama. This comes just days after he threatened to retake control of the Panama Canal. Trump has argued that Panama is charging unreasonable fees for US ships passing through the canal and expressed concern about Chinese influence over Panama. He even claimed, without evidence, that there are Chinese soldiers operating the canal.
In a Truth Social post, Trump said, "Few understand Latin American politics better than Kevin. He will do a fantastic job of representing our country’s interests in Panama."
He also added, sarcastically, "Merry Christmas to everyone, including China’s fantastic soldiers, who are illegally operating the Panama Canal."
Kevin Marino Cabrera was born and raised in Miami, Florida, to Cuban immigrant parents. He has previously held various positions in Miami and led Trump’s 2020 election campaign in Florida.
Panama’s president,Jose Raul Mulino, quickly dismissed Trump’s claims, stating that Panama’s sovereignty is not up for negotiation. He denied any Chinese influence over the canal and confirmed that there are no Chinese soldiers present.
The Panama Canal, a vital waterway for international trade, was built by the United States and opened in 1914. The US controlled both the canal and the surrounding land for decades before transferring full control to Panama in 1999. While a Hong Kong-based company, Hutchinson Ports, handles operations at both ends of the canal, China has no direct involvement in its administration.
