According to a nationwide study published in The Journal of Clinical Investigation, autoimmune diseases do not share a single common genetic vulnerability, but instead form distinct genetic clusters that reflect the specific tissues and organs they affect. To untangle why certain autoimmune conditions tend to run in families, researchers examined data from individuals born in Sweden between 1932 and 1983. According to the study data, the analysis tracked nearly 3.84 million full-sibling pairs to estimate how often diseases occurred together within families, revealing the degree of shared genetic risk.

Out of the 6,336,615 people tracked in the registry data from 1969 through 2013, over 707,000 individuals—representing 11.2% of the study population—received at least one autoimmune diagnosis. The data also showed that approximately 1.3% of the population had more than one such diagnosis. In contrast, multiple sclerosis stood out by exhibiting relatively weak genetic associations with almost all other evaluated autoimmune conditions.
