Reevaluating Jokowi’s Anticorruption Legacy: Evidence After His Name Emerges in OCCRP’s Dirtiest Officials List

Jokowi Unruffled as OCCRP Lists Him Among Most Corrupt Leaders

Solo, Indonesia – President Joko Widodo, popularly known as Jokowi, has maintained his composure after being listed among the world’s most corrupt leaders by the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP). The Indonesian president responded with a laugh, brushing off the allegation with a request for evidence.

"He-he-he…, yes, corrupt, corrupt what, who’s being corrupted, right? You should prove it, right?" Jokowi quipped while laughing, responding to a journalist’s query at his residence in Solo, as reported by detikJateng.

Jokowi acknowledged the prevalent spread of slander and malicious framing, much of which lacks substantial evidence. He urged for such accusations to be backed by concrete proof.

"Nowadays, there are so many slanders, so many malicious framings, so many accusations without any evidence, right? That’s the situation now," Jokowi remarked.

When asked if there were political undertones to the accusation, Jokowi laughed again, suggesting that such malicious framings could originate from various sources, including non-governmental organizations, political parties, or other associations.

The OCCRP previously released its Person of the Year 2024 list, which includes finalists in the categories of organized crime and corruption. While Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad was crowned the winner, Jokowi was among the five finalists who made the cut based on global reader and journalist votes.

Other finalists in the category included Kenyan President William Ruto, former Indonesian President Joko Widodo, Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, and Indian businessman Gautam Adani.

Jokowi’s inclusion in the list sparked laughter and dismissive remarks, with the Indonesian president appearing unfazed by the allegation. The full video of Jokowi’s reaction can be viewed here.

"Transparency International Ranks Indonesia’s Jokowi Among World’s Most Corrupt Leaders"

President Jokowi Nonchalant About Being Named OCCRP‘s 2024 Person of the Year Finalist for Organized Crime and Corruption

Indonesian President Joko Widodo, popularly known as Jokowi, has responded casually to his inclusion in the final list for the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP)’s 2024 Person of the Year, specifically in the category for organized crime and corruption. The OCCRP, known for its investigative journalism across borders, has surprised the public by announcing this year’s finalists.

When asked about his inclusion in the list, Jokowi laughed and questioned, "Which corruption? What has been corrupted, and where is the proof?" He was speaking from his residence in Solo, Central Java, on Tuesday, February 28, 2024.

Extending his explanation, Jokowi attributed his inclusion to a lack of concrete evidence, stating, "Now, there are so many slanders, so many malicious framings. Many accusations without evidence. That’s what’s happening now."

Jokowi further emphasized that anyone can make accusations against him using whatever means they choose. "Anyone can use any vehicle for that purpose. They can use NGOs, political parties, mass organizations to accuse or make malicious framings, to make baseless accusations," he asserted.

Other notable figures included in OCCRP’s list are Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Kenyan President William Ruto, Indian businessman Gautam Adani, and former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

In a statement, OCCRP said the project aims to highlight the impact of corruption and criminal activities on societies worldwide and to encourage meaningful discourse about accountability and transparency in governance.

“PDIP Condemns Bahlil’s Defense of Jokowi as ‘Public Mockery’

PDIP‘s Guntur Romli Clashes with Golkar‘s Bahlil Lahadalia Over Jokowi’s Third Term

In a heated exchange, PDIP spokesman Guntur Romli has criticized Golkar’s chairman Bahlil Lahadalia for defending President Joko Widodo ("Jokowi") against claims of a third term. Guntur, in a tell-all interview, labeled Bahlil’s defense as "illogical and laughable."

"Bahlil’s defense is illogical. First, the discussion about a third term wasn’t just Bahlil’s idea; it was floated by several party chairs like Airlangga, Muhaimin Iskandar, Zulkifli Hasan, and even ministers like LBP and Tito," Guntur told reporters on Tuesday, adding, "Bahlil wasn’t even Golkar’s chairman then, he was just the Ministry of Investment chief."

Guntur further threw shade at Bahlil by referencing a statement from Jokowi about being ‘slapped’ over the third term issue. "Bahlil wasn’t reprimanded or punished by Jokowi for proposing the third term idea," Guntur stated.

"Secondly, Bahlil is one of the people Jokowi labeled as ‘slapping and agenda-setting.’ Yet, Bahlil wasn’t reprimanded or punished, and instead, he became the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, and later, Golkar’s chairman. This doesn’t seem like someone who ‘slapped’ Jokowi," Guntur quipped.

Guntur believes that Bahlil’s defense is just a public joke. "Bahlil’s illogical defense is similar to the illogical protests against Jokowi. They’re both just laughing stocks," he commented.

Guntur also stated that PDIP had always kept Jokowi in check, even when the third term talks were prevalent. "In 2022, when the third term talks were rampant, PDI Perjuangan was still very close to Jokowi. We made sure he didn’t overstep his bounds, like wanting to extend his term or run for a third term. Bahlil, at that time, wasn’t very close to Jokowi, but he tried to push the third term idea like a broker," Guntur revealed.

Meanwhile, Bahlil Lahadalia has refuted claims that he received orders from Jokowi regarding the third term issue. In a press conference, he announced that he was the first to suggest delaying the 2024 presidential election. Bahlil, however, reiterated that the idea did not come from the President.

Catch us for more updates on this brewing political storm.

7 Facts about Jokowi’s Inclusion in the World’s Most Corrupt Leaders 2024 Shortlist

Indonesia‘s Former President Jokowi in Global Spotlight Over Corruption Allegations

JAKARTA – The nomination of Indonesia’s former president, Joko Widodo, or Jokowi, for "Person of the Year 2024" by the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) has been a subject of intense public interest. OCCRP, a global investigative organization, annually recognizes individuals whose actions have significantly impacted global corruption and organized crime.

Here are seven key facts highlighting the intriguing aspects of this nomination:

1. OCCRP’s Process and Criteria
OCCRP bases its selection on data from journalists, readers, and its global network. The criteria focus on the individuals’ roles in large-scale corruption and authoritarianism, with the aim of exposing misconduct and encouraging transparency.

2. Jokowi Among Controversial Heads of State
Jokowi stands among a contentious group of finalists, including Kenya’s President William Ruto, Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and Indian billionaire Gautam Adani. Each finalist faces criticism for the adverse effects of their governance on their respective countries.

3. Bashar al-Assad: OCCRP’s "Person of the Year"

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad took the top spot for his regime’s blatant corruption and human rights abuses, including the horrific use of chemical weapons, over several decades.

4. Other Noteworthy Mentionables
Other leaders under scrutiny include Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo of Equatorial Guinea, who received the "Lifetime Non-Achievement Award," reflecting his notoriously brutal reign and plundering of his country’s resources.

5. Criticism of Jokowi’s Policies
Jokowi’s nomination rests primarily on criticism of his perceived lax approach to eradicating corruption during his tenure. Some strategic policies are seen as opaque, appearing to favor influential elites over broader transparency.

6. Public Outcry Against Corruption
The public’s frustration with corruption is evident in cases like Kenya’s, where over 40,000 citizens urged OCCRP to nominate President William Ruto, underscoring widespread discontent with widespread corruption and economic injustice.

7. Jokowi’s Assertive Response
In response to his nomination, Jokowi firmly rejected the accusations. Speaking from his residence in Solo, he questioned the basis of the claims:

"What corruption are we talking about? Show me the evidence, where is it?"

Jokowi refuted various allegations, including election manipulation and resource exploitation, dismissing them as baseless slander and political framing. He pressed for evidence-based fact-checking, echoing the vital importance of substantiating such serious charges.

As the world awaits more information, one thing is clear: high-profile individuals like Jokowi face considerable scrutiny in today’s interconnected world. The OCCRP nomination serves as a stark reminder that leaders’ actions resonate far beyond their country’s borders.

Prabowo’s Era: IKN’s Progress and ASN Relocation” Alternatively, “The Prabowo Era: IKN Development and ASN Relocation

Headline: IKN‘s Next Chapter: Key Figures Depart, New Leaders Emerge as Prabowo Takes Helm

Article:

In a significant development, the building of the Ibu Kota Nusantara (IKN), a key project of President Joko Widodo‘s (Jokowi) administration, is progressing swiftly. By 2024, several infrastructure projects, including the Bendungan Sepaku dam, SPAM Sepaku, the 3A and 3B toll road segments, IKN airport, Istana Garuda and Istana Negara IKN, and the Jembatan Pulau Balang bridge connecting IKN and Balikpapan, are poised to be completed.

However, in a surprise move, Bambang Susantono and Dhony Rahajoe, respectively the head and deputy head of the IKN authority (OIKN), have stepped down from their positions, as announced on June 3, 2024. This decision came just before the planned national Independence Day celebrations in IKN.

Jokowi attributed their departure to personal reasons. Bambang, in a message shared at an OIKN meeting on May 27, 2024, and later corroborated by deputy Mohammed Ali Berawi, expressed no regrets about serving with his colleagues, praising them as "outstanding individuals." Dhony, on the other hand, revealed that he had been planning to step down since 2023 and had discussed this with Jokowi, with the final decision coming in early June through a presidential decree.

Following their departure, Jokowi appointed Basuki Hadimuljono, then Minister of Public Works and Housing, as the acting head of the OIKN, with Raja Juli Antoni, then deputy minister of agrarian affairs and spatial planning, serving as acting deputy head. After Prabowo Subianto’s inauguration as the new president, Basuki was officially appointed as the head of the OIKN on November 5, 2024, while Raja Juli Antoni took over as the Minister of Forestry in the new cabinet.

Upon assuming his new role, Basuki shared that Prabowo had urged him to swiftly carry out his duties, to which Basuki promptly responded, "I’m ready for your orders, sir."

Next: What does the future hold for IKN under President Prabowo? Read on to find out.

The Phenomenal Reach: A Compendium of Jokowi to Anies’ Riddle Videos

PDI Perjuangan Defends Former Sekjen Hasto Kristiyanto Amidst Corruption Case

In a recent turn of events, Jokowi's Stance on the 12% PPN Tax Bill"</strong></p>”>Guntur Romli, the Spokesperson (Jubir) of PDI Perjuangan, has come out in support of former Sekjen PDIP Hasto Kristiyanto, who has been named a suspect in a corruption case by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK). Romli dismissed suggestions that Hasto’s mention of the three-period debate while facing corruption allegations was a panicked move, instead attributing it to the influence of the current presidential administration.

"Using the Javanese phrase ‘nabok nilih tangan,’ Hasto was accused using someone else’s hand. The leadership of KPK today was selected and chosen during whose era? The high-ranking officials, especially the enforcers of the law, who chose and appointed them? The influence of Jokowi is still very strong," Romli stated on Friday (27/12/2024).

Hasto, following his nomination as a suspect, has recently been in the spotlight for touching on the three-period debate, suggesting that President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) indeed aims for a third consecutive term. Romli, however, believes that the current administration still bears the influence of the previous Jokowi era.

"Presidents change, but ‘Jokowi’s people’ remain in power. Hasto possesses a number of videos relevant to the three-period issue and plans to release them," Romli added.

Interestingly, Hasto is also alleged to have video evidence of significant impact, including claims of orchestrated attempts to criminalize former DKI Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan. Guntur expects these revelations to cause a magnitude of scandal comparable to the Watergate case in the United States.

Meanwhile, Chairman of Jokowi Mania (Joman), Immanuel Ebenezer (Noel), responded to Hasto’s previous statements regarding the three-period debate. Noel believes Hasto’s comments were a result of panic following his nomination as a suspect.

"The issue of a third period is over, and we’ve already made it clear that we reject the idea. It’s not just Hasto; we’re all against it," Noel told reporters. "Hasto’s comments might have been caused by panic because he suddenly became a suspect."

Noel also emphasized that the election has already taken place, making the issue of a third term irrelevant. Moreover, President Joko Widodo has reportedly distanced himself from the three-period notion, attributing such claims to political groups seeking attention.

High-Speed Train Plans: En route to Surabaya

by Chief Editor December 26, 2024
written by Chief Editor

In a recent development, Jakarta is abuzz with discussions surrounding the future of the Jakarta-Surabaya High-Speed Rail (HSR) project, with the fresh leadership of the Ministry of Coordinating Affairs for Infrastructure and Regional Development. Minister Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY) shed some light on the project’s prospects under the new administration of President Prabowo Subianto.

A Cautious Approach

AHY emphasized the need for careful planning and thorough consideration before proceeding with the massive undertaking. "We’re still doing our calculations, still studying," he said. "Given the scale of the project, we need to be precise and thorough in our calculations," AHY added, speaking from Halim Perdanakusuma International Airport in Jakarta.

Engaging Stakeholders

In line with this cautious approach, AHY also revealed plans to involve numerous stakeholders in the project’s planning phase. This inclusive strategy aims to ensure a well-thought-out and robust blueprint for the Jakarta-Surabaya HSR project.

Status of the Project

Meanwhile, Dwiyana Slamet Riyadi, Director of PT Kereta Cepat Indonesia China (KCIC), the company responsible for the project, stated that currently, the Indonesian high-speed rail project remains in the pre-study phase. "We’re still in the pre-study phase. Everything is currently being discussed among all stakeholders," said Dwiyana when contacted separately.

A Brief History

Initially mooted during the administration of President Joko Widodo, the Jakarta-Surabaya HSR project has seen its fair share of ups and downs. Earlier this year, KCIC hinted at plans for gradually extending Jakarta’s high-speed rail network to include Surabaya, potentially starting with a connection to Yogyakarta first. However, under the new administration of President Prabowo, the project’s future remains uncertain.

Wakil Menteri Perhubungan (Wamenhub), Suntana, had previously hinted that the feasibility study for the project was ongoing. He emphasized the importance of thorough evaluation, stating, "The principle is, if it makes transportation more accessible, cheaper, and comfortable, why not? But of course, we can’t just proceed without proper evaluation."

Looking ahead, the future of the Jakarta-Surabaya High-Speed Rail project hangs in the balance, awaiting the outcome of ongoing feasibility studies. presidency’s stance on massive projects, and commitments to public welfare, will all play a crucial role in shaping the project’s future.

Preventing Ex-Minister Yasonna Laoly’s Travel Abroad: KPK’s Interim Measures

by Chief Editor December 25, 2024
written by Chief Editor

Breaking: PDI-P’s Yasonna Laoly and Hasto Kristiyanto Banned from Traveling Abroad in PDIP Corruption Case

Jakarta, CNN Indonesiaedir — In a significant development, the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has prohibited senior Indonesia Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) members Yasonna H. Laoly (YHL) and Hasto Kristiyanto (HK) from traveling abroad. This move comes as part of an ongoing investigation into a corruption case involving the appointment of DPR RI members for the 2019-2024 period.

KPK Spokesperson Tessa Mahardhika Sugiarto confirmed the issuance of a travel ban order (Surat Keputusan Nomor 1757 Tahun 2024) on Tuesday, December 24, 2024. This order will be effective for six months, aiming to facilitate the ongoing investigation into a case of bribery involving the time-sharing (PAW) mechanism.

The KPK holds that the presence of both YHL and HK in Indonesia is crucial for the continued progress of the corruption investigation. The ban comes as YHL, a former Minister of Justice and Human Rights under Joko Widodo’s administration, faces suspicions related to a letter requesting a fatwa from the Supreme Court (MA) regarding the interpretation of the PAW mechanism in the cases of Harun Masiku and Nazarudin Kiemas.

In a related development, the KPK has named Donny Tri Istiqomah, an advocate for PDIP, as a suspect in the same case. With the addition of HK and Donny Tri Istiqomah, the total number of suspects has risen to six. HK is currently facing two charges: bribery and obstruction of justice in the Harun Masiku case.

HK has previously been questioned and testified at the Jakarta Corruption Court. His most recent interrogation occurred in June 2024.

Stay tuned for further developments in this evolving story.

Indonesia’s Surprise: Megawati’s Reaction to Anwar’s MK Leadership

by Chief Editor December 12, 2024
written by Chief Editor

Indonesia’s current major political figure, Megawati Soekarnoputri, expressed her surprise and confusion when Anwar Usman was re-elected as the Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court (MK). Megawati couldn’t understand why Anwar was chosen when there were colleagues who, in her view, had more seniority. Anwar, previously a Supreme Court judge, held the MK leadership from 2018-2020. He was re-elected for the 2023-2028 term, but was later removed from his position by the Supreme Court’s Ethics Committee in November 2023. Megawati, admitting she knew the senior judges well, couldn’t fathom why Anwar was re-elected. She specifically mentioned MK Decision No. 90, which altered the age restriction for presidential and vice-presidential candidates.

Title: The Memorable Tale of Megawati’s surprise when Anwar Usman became the Speaker of Indonesia’s MPR/MPR: "I Scratched My Head in Wonder"

Introduction

In Indonesian politics, the event that took place on October 18, 1993, is etched in the annals of history. On this day, Anwar Usman, a prominent figure in the United Development Party (PPP), was surprisingly elected as the Speaker of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR), a position that was widely expected to go to Megawati Sukarnoputri, then the leader of the Indonesian Democratic Party (PDI). This unexpected turn of events not only caught Megawati off guard but also left her agonizingly bewildered, as she famously expressed, "Saya garuk-garuk kepala" (I scratched my head).

The Background

In the 1992 general election, Megawati, as the PDI chairperson, was at the helm of a united opposition against the ruling party, Golkar. Despite her efforts, PDI suffered a defeat, winning only 14.7% of the votes. Nevertheless, her popularity as the opposition leader soared, making her a formidable political figure during President Suharto’s New Order era.

Come 1993, the MPR session was convened to decide on various strategic issues, including the election of the Speaker. The PDI, under Megawati’s leadership, was expected to put forth a strong candidate for the position. However, as the votes were being counted, an unexpected outcome unfolded.

The Earthquake at the MPR

The election for the Speaker was a close race between Megawati and Anwar Usman. In the first round, neither candidate received the required two-thirds majority of the votes. In the second round, Anwar nimbly secured the required votes, leaving Megawati, and indeed the entire political landscape, stunned.

Megawati’s reaction was televised, and her bewilderment was palpable. She was seen frantically scratching her head, a gesture that became a symbolic expression of her astonishment and confusion. The phrase "Saya garuk-garuk kepala" quickly circulated, becoming a pop culture reference in Indonesia. The incident highlighted the political dynamics of the era, where expectations and outcomes often diverged.

The Aftermath

Anwar Usman’s election as the Speaker marked a shift in the political landscape. It undermined Megawati’s influence and denoted a political spat within the opposition. Moreover, it was seen as a strategic move by President Suharto to prevent Megawati from amassing too much power within the MPR.

Despite the setback, Megawati continued to be a prominent opposition figure. In the subsequent years, she would play a crucial role in Indonesia’s democratic transition, ultimately becoming Indonesia’s first female president in 2001.

Conclusion

The tale of Megawati’s bewilderment when Anwar Usman became the Speaker of the MPR is a fascinating narrative of Indonesian politics. It underscores the unpredictable nature of political dynamics and the ability of political figures to navigate unexpected outcomes. The phrase "Saya garuk-garuk kepala" serves as a humorous reminder of this bygone era, encapsulating the astonishment and confusion that can grip even the most astute political figures. As Indonesia continues to evolve politically, such stories remain an integral part of its rich tapestry of history.
