The permit expired on April 26, 2020, and the last recorded periodic inspection was at Pulogadung, Jakarta, with its status expired on December 15, 2023.

This incident is not the first fatal crash involving large vehicles such as buses and trucks in Indonesia. Lessons must be learned to prevent such tragedies from recurring. Djoko emphasized that the government has not been serious enough in addressing transportation safety issues, stating, "Safety is not a priority for the state."

Despite his injuries, Saifudin was conscious after the crash and witnessed the grim fate of his wife and daughter.

"The news of their death broke my heart. They were my everything," Saifudin said, through tears, from his hospital bed at Bhayangkara Hasta Brata Hospital, where he was being treated for his injuries.

In the aftermath of the crash, the police confirmed that four people had died, including Anis and Syafa. The other two victims were local motorcycle riders. The bus driver has been arrested and is facing multiple counts of manslaughter and vehicular homicide.

The system, outlined in Police Regulation No. 5/2021 regarding the Issuance and Labeling of Driver’s Licenses (SIM), introduces point deductions ranging from 1 to 10 points, contingent on the severity of the traffic offense committed.

Under this merit point system, drivers possession a valid SIM will start with 12 points annually. Minor violations will incur a one-point deduction, while moderate and severe offenses will result in three and five points deductions respectively. If an offense leads to fatalities, 12 points will be deducted.

"For hit-and-run cases, SIM can be revoked immediately," asserted Aan Suhanan.

Upon exhausting one’s point quota within a year, the SIM will be temporarily suspended or blocked. Subsequent SIM renewals will also require the issuance of a new certificate of no police record (SKCK), bearing a record of accumulated traffic violations and road accident involvement.
