University of Jember in Mourning: Student Jumps to Death from 8th Floor

In a somber turn of events, the state-owned University of Jember (UNEJ) was engulfed in grief on Monday, December 23, 2024. A student with the initials DRY took his own life by jumping from the 8th floor of the C-RiSSH building.

DRY, a freshman majoring in Sociology who started his academic journey in 2023, ended his life that fateful Monday afternoon. The university community is still grappling with the devastating news.

A close friend of the deceased, with the initials SDN, shared that DRY was an introverted individual who preferred to keep to himself. SDN, who shared several classes with DRY, revealed, "He was quite reserved and not very sociable. It took some effort to get him to open up."

Interestingly, SDN noted that DRY’s introverted nature seemed to disappear when they were together in places of worship for their final project. SDN described the stark contrast, "When we were together in places of worship for our final project, he didn’t seem introverted at all."

In the hours leading up to his tragic decision, DRY had posted a poignant status on his WhatsApp account, stating "Farewell." SDN, who had witnessed DRY’s fleetingly despondent statuses over the past month, expressed concern, "He often posted sad statuses, hinting at feeling unappreciated. The ‘Farewell’ status he posted just before his act was particularly worrying."

The university community is devastated by this loss and has extended its deepest sympathies to DRY’s family and friends. UNEJ has assured students that mental health support services are available to help them cope with this tragic event.
